Other relations are equally obscure. A half-sister and a brother named Gotegin play the antagonistic roles in the Vulgate Cycle ( Lancelot–Grail) and Diu Crône respectively, but neither character is mentioned elsewhere (besides the Vulgate-inspired tradition). While later literature almost always named King Leodegrance as Guinevere's father, her mother was usually unmentioned, although she was sometimes said to be dead (this is the case in the Middle English romance The Adventures of Arthur, in which the ghost of Guinevere's mother appears to her and Gawain in Inglewood Forest). Some works name cousins of note, though these too do not usually appear more than once. One of such cousins is Guiomar, an early lover of Morgan le Fay in several French romances; other cousins of Guinevere include her confidante Elyzabel (Elibel) and Morgan's knight Carrant (or Garaunt, [16] apparently Geraint [17]). In Perlesvaus, after the death of Guinevere, her relative King Madaglan(s) d'Oriande is a major villain who invades Arthur's lands trying to force him to abandon Christianity and to marry his sister, Queen Jandree. [18] Portrayals [ edit ] Guinevere Takes Refuge in a Convent, Edmund H. Garrett's illustration for Legends of King Arthur and His Court (1911) Guinevere was described as very beautiful by legends. She used to show a very admirable attitude. She always cared for her fellow Knights and motivated them to inculcate deep moral values. She was also loved by all for her sentimental feelings towards one and all. Guinevere appears in the 2011 television series Once Upon a Time, played by actress Joana Metrass [ pt]. This version of Guinevere is portrayed with a noticeable Castilian accent. She was stated by production in this adaptation to be Lancelot's true love while being deceived and manipulated into continuing her marriage with Arthur by a "fixing" spell that "fixed" all the problems between the two, inadvertently making her forget her love for Lancelot.

She is either forced into or conceives and engineers an extra-marital relationship with Sir Lancelot and is condemned, according to law. She either was a willing accomplice to Mordred’s treachery against Arthur, as suggested in Wace and Layamon, or was forced into it against her will as stated in John Hardyng’s “Chronicle” (1457). Early mentions of Queen Guinevere, in the Triads of the Island of Britain, give tantalizing glimpses of her original relationship with Mordred: he is shown forcing his way into Arthur’s Court, dragging the Queen from her throne and striking her, but the reasons why are unknown. The incident may have been related to quarrels between Guinevere and her sister, Mordred’s wife, Gwenhwyfach, which are said to have been the eventual cause of the Battle of Camlan. However she may have felt toward her marriage, Guinevere is all courtesy and grace. Norris J. Lacy comments: Göller, Karl Heinz (1981). The Alliterative Morte Arthure: A Reassessment of the Poem. As the youngest daughter of one of the few noble households in the Land of Dawn, House Baroque, she studied at the Magic Academy since she was a child, and is extremely talented in magic. A long time later, Morgana enchanted Gwen so that she would fall in love with the Lancelot, whom Morgana had resurrected after his death, to prevent Guinevere from becoming queen. Gaius believed that Morgana couldn't stand the thought of a serving girl taking what Morgana believed was her rightful place on the throne. Gwen met Morgana in the woods whilst travelling to Camelot to warn them that Morgana and Helios were raising an army, and her former friend turned her into a doe so that she would be hunted by Arthur and his men. Fortunately Merlin recognised her and Arthur found her engagement ring so Gwen survived the incident, albeit with an injured leg. Gwen eventually dueled Morgana in Camelot, and asked her why she hated her so much. Morgana seemed remorseful about what had happened the their relationship and actually apologised to Gwen but felt that she had to die so that Morgana could become queen. Morgana disarmed Gwen and pointed her sword at her throat but hesitated just long enough for Merlin to rescue her before Morgana could strike the fatal blow. That night, using a ladder, he climbed up to Guinevere’s window. She was waiting for him and, after they whispered their greetings, he told her that he wanted more than anything to come into her chamber, but the window was barred with iron. At first Gwen said to Merlin that Lancelot wasn’t her type, but later she developed romantic feelings for him ( Lancelot). Lancelot turned to Gwen to get armour and weapons before going out to kill a Griffin. Gwen was sad when Lancelot left Camelot, thinking she would never see him again but they were later reunited while Gwen was the prisoner of Hengist. Lancelot said he had little to live for, but Gwen reprimanded him for this, saying that he was "everything beautiful in this world." He was determined to risk his life so that he may escape, to which she objected. He then told her that he would die for her a hundred times over, and Gwen kissed him before running away. [55] In the episode, she is a knight who became queen because of her loyalty to Merlin.
