Hay, Frank. "Nematodes - the good, the bad and the ugly". APS News & Views. apsnet.org. American Phytopathological Society . Retrieved 28 November 2020. Most slugsfeed in or on the soil surface, but keeled slugs ( Milax species) live and feed mostly in the root zone. Bell G (1982). The masterpiece of nature: the evolution and genetics of sexuality. Berkeley: University of California Press. ISBN 978-0-520-04583-5. Barriers, thought to repel slugs, include rough or sharp textured mulches and substances thought to be distasteful or strong smelling. Copper-base barriers have been shown to repel slugs in some studies. A recent RHS studyin a garden-realistic scenario however, found no reduction in slug damage from barriers made of copper tape, bark mulch, eggshells, sharp grit or wool pellets

Nemaslug Nematodes are easy to apply using a watering can and do not leave any unsightly residues. Each application of nematodes will provide at least six weeks control of slugs. This is generally enough time for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established. The majority of the slugs will die underground, so don't expect to see dead slugs lying around. Slug nematodes are microscopic, transparent worms, which feed and multiply inside the slug, once the nematodes are inside the slug it stops feeding after a few days and then dies within a week. The nematodes are already in the soil in the UK but just not enough for the number slugs, so effectively when applying slug nematodes we are just topping up the quantities. Slugs and snails, along with other animals including conches and limpets, are gastropods. A gastropod is a single shelled, soft-bodied animal in the mollusc group of animals. The name gastropod comes from the Greek words gaster, meaning stomach, and poda, meaning feet. All gastropods have a muscular foot that they use to move around. Slugs have evolved to have a reduced shell that often cannot be seen from the outside. So safe and easy to apply and because they are already in the soil they are completely safe to use around children, pets and wildlife, making them the perfect solution for organic gardening. When Should I Apply Slug Nematodes?2/3 days before planting as once the nematodes are applied the slugs stop feeding after a few days and die within a week. Using slug nematodes allows me to reduce the use of harmful chemical pesticides and garden organically. Chemicals may not only cause harm to non-target organisms but also contaminate soil and water, posing a risk to humans and the environment alike.Ruppert EE, Fox RS, Barnes RD (2004). Most nematode species are dioecious, with separate male and female individuals, though some, such as Caenorhabditis elegans, are androdioecious, consisting of hermaphrodites and rare males. Both sexes possess one or two tubular gonads. In males, the sperm are produced at the end of the gonad and migrate along its length as they mature. The testis opens into a relatively wide seminal vesicle and then during intercourse into a glandular and muscular ejaculatory duct associated with the vas deferens and cloaca. In females, the ovaries each open into an oviduct (in hermaphrodites, the eggs enter a spermatheca first) and then a glandular uterus. The uteri both open into a common vulva/vagina, usually located in the middle of the morphologically ventral surface. [49]
