In late September 2023, PNL vice-president and deputy Ben Oni Ardelean resigned from the party and announced that he is initiating a new political project. [30] Consequently, he recently launched an allegedly conservative political party called Hope's Movement ( Romanian: Mișcarea Speranței) for the disillusioned electorate in Romania. The Cîțu cabinet, which took office on 23 December 2020, [4] comprised two conservative liberal parties, namely the PNL and the UDMR/RMDSZ as well as the progressive liberal USR PLUS (which, after its latest congress held in early October 2021, returned to its initial official denomination, more specifically USR). [5]Former PSD president and Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă has, in the meantime, become president of the Nation People Together (NOI) party. The Green Party (PV) was also relaunched [28] under the new name of the Green Party (The Greens) - ( Romanian: Partidul Verde - Verzii)). The party is currently led by two co-presidents, more specifically Marius Lazăr and Lavinia Cosma (former USR member between 2016 and 2019). The party first appeared in the polls in the beginning of 2023. [29]

Presidential elections will be held in Romania in either mid- or late November 2024, with an eventual second round to be held in late November or early December 2024 as well (depending on the final results of the first round). They will be the ninth presidential elections held in post-1989 Romania. As the Romanian Constitution allows a maximum of two presidential terms (consecutive or not), incumbent President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, first elected in 2014 and then re-elected in 2019, is not eligible for re-election. His second (and last) term will normally end in December 2024. In a televised talk show, on 24 April 2021, the party leader Marcel Ciolacu stated that "is very likely" that the party president (himself, at that time) will not run for president in 2024. [6] Asked about considering a presidential candidacy, member of the Chamber of Deputies, Alexandru Rafila vaguely answered on 4 July 2021 "never say never", but underlined that running for president is "definitely not my goal". [7] In another televised talk show, former Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu stated that the party is "going for the win" in all elections scheduled in 2024 (legislative elections, local elections, European Parliament elections, and presidential elections) and he "did not rule out" that Mircea Geoană could be, yet again, the party's presidential candidate. [8] Mircea Geoană ran for president in 2009, but narrowly lost in the second round to Traian Băsescu, who was then re-elected for a second and last term. According to ongoing speculation, Mircea Geoană might very well run for presidency in 2024, but it is yet unclear if he will receive PSD support, according to incumbent PSD president Marcel Ciolacu.
