Vera's Brenda Blethyn confirms details of 'special' episode after filming before Christmas". ChronicleLive. 11 January 2023 . Retrieved 31 March 2023. The scene is just before Christmas on crowded train when Margaret Krukowski, an elderly elegantly dressed woman, is stabbed to death. Yet, it seems no-one saw the murderer, even though Joe and his daughter Jessie were there on the train at the time. The "island" seen in this episode isn't actually and island at all. It's what is known as Church Hill, which in reality is just at the other side of the Aln Estuary.

A man, outwardly happily married, is discovered in the river with his shoe laces tied together suggesting suicide until the post mortem confirms murder. The victim was an informant for Revenue and Customs, on a case regarding the smuggling of alcohol which widens the suspects from family to include his business associates. This is the sixth book in the Vera Stanhope series and it opens on a snowy day in Northumberland, just before Christmas. Airing on ITV in January 2019, this series saw cast and crew hard at work across the region, in locations ranging from Alnmouth and Amble in Northumberland - including Braid, Northside, the harbour and quayside - to Jesmond and the Grainger Market in Newcastle. Vera investigates the death of a local lad whose body is found wrapped in plastic sheets at a rural teenage hangout. When a young woman, Lizzie Faulkner, is shot late at night outside the holiday chalet where she and two friends are staying for the weekend, Vera and Joe suspect that her murder is linked to poachers operating in nearby fields. They identify a suspect, Robert Doran, but despite being in the vicinity at the time, he denies being responsible for Lizzie's murder. Vera begins to suspect the woman's death may have been a case of mistaken identity, and that the intended victim may have been one of the chalet designers, Corrine Franks, who was meant to have been staying there at the time. A link to a tragic car accident a few months earlier involving Corrine, which led to an innocent woman losing her life, appears to confirm their theory. When Corrine is later killed in a hit-and-run, the team finally get the breakthrough they have been looking for.

Why a Booktrail?

Joe Ashworth, Vera's partner, and his daughter Jessie (Olivia Armstrong) board a train in "On Harbour Street," from "Vera" to begin its fourth season.

It's a neatly crafted piece of work, and a reminder that the great success that Ann has enjoyed in recent years, both with these books and the Shetland novels starring another likeable cop, Jimmy Perez, is well deserved." Arriving at the scene, DI Vera Stanhope is relieved to have an excuse to escape the holiday festivities. As she stands on the silent, snow-covered station platform, Vera feels a familiar buzz of anticipation, sensing that this will be a complex and unusual case. How nice to have a story opening at the beginning of the actually story; no prologue. Not only is the setting established, but we also have a sense of the character for one of the protagonists, Joe. And Vera; how can one not like Vera and her no-nonsense style, her self-awareness—“She didn’t take notes at this point. Notes stopped her concentrating.”--and her awareness of, and relationship to, others: “On the platform in the distance she saw Joe Ashworth. Her sergeant and her surrogate son, her protégé. And her conscience.” Weekly Top 30 Programmes: ITV w/e 29 April 2012". Broadcasters' Audience Research Board. Archived from the original on 15 December 2012 . Retrieved 8 May 2012.

At the time Blethyn calls it "a very impressive location", adding that the victim was also shown on board the Shields Ferry before his death. Alistair Petrie ( Stuart Bayliss) & Kingsley Ben-Adir ( Dr. Marcus Summer) also worked together on Deep State (2018) as George White & Khalid Walker respectively. One of the first sightings of Vera was at a gym in Gateshead - or rather in the snooker hall above Low Fell Life Gym - where Blethyn was inside filming while location vans took up space in its car park.

Joe probably leaves for family reasons - his wife calls him upset because he's apparently forgotten about a counseling session for one of their children. Unlike Vera, he has a life outside of the department.

DCI Vera Stanhope has two apparently unrelated murders and a kidnapping. Her life is complicated by the death of her father and her decision to live in his home which sadly contains the cluttered remains of his life. The story unfolds with Vera discovering that the murders are tied to photos and a missing camera.
