In the US our SPF is classified as an over the counter (OTC) drug, and in UK and EU it’s a cosmetic item; both of which our manufacturer is certified to produce. I have to remind myself that the difference between an SPF 30 and 50 is slight. An SPF 30 defends the skin from approximately 97% of UVB rays, whereas a 50 filters out 98%. So it isn’t as big a deal as it sounds. I just can’t help wanting everything to be that one percent more! Anyway… What is the true difference between SPF 30 and 50? Various research states that the SPF (sun protection factor) is a number that helps determine roughly how long you can stay in the sun for without burning vs your norm without protection. For example, if your skin would usually burn after 10 minutes of sun exposure, then an SPF 30 estimates protection for 300 minutes and an SPF 50 estimates 500 minutes of protection, however this can differ based on skin sensitivity and the strength of the sun rays.
