Geisel was awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) from Whittier College in 1980. [61] He also received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal from the professional children's librarians in 1980, recognizing his "substantial and lasting contributions to children's literature". At the time, it was awarded every five years. [62] [ non-primary source needed] He won a special Pulitzer Prize in 1984 citing his "contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America's children and their parents". [63] [ non-primary source needed] Illness, death, and posthumous honors Bronze statue of Dr. Seuss and his character The Cat in the Hat outside the Geisel Library in San Diego

He received two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children's Special for Halloween Is Grinch Night (1978) and Outstanding Animated Program for The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat (1982). [8] In 1984, he won a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation. His birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative focused on reading created by the National Education Association. But right now, when the Japs are planting their hatchets in our skulls, it seems like a hell of a time for us to smile and warble: "Brothers!" It is a rather flabby battle cry. If we want to win, we've got to kill Japs, whether it depresses John Haynes Holmes or not. We can get palsy-walsy afterward with those that are left. [79]

Many have tried to classify Dr. Seuss's artwork, but there is no true consensus among critics on which school of art or movement he belongs to.

You can get help from teachers, but you are going to have to learn a lot by yourself, sitting alone in a room.Morgan, Neil; Morgan, Judith Giles (1996). Dr. Seuss Mr. Geisel: a biography. New York: Da Capo Press. ISBN 978-0-306-80736-7.

The bulk of this collection consists of painting and drawing. It does, however, include photographs of many sculptures created by Geisel. Both forms of art display the characteristic style and form that can be seen in all of his children's books. Research on Diversity in Youth Literature (RDYL) published a new study on racism in Dr. Seuss books. In this research, they looked at how and to what degree non-white characters are represented in Seuss’s children’s books. Through the research, they found that “In the fifty Dr. Seuss books published, 2,240 human characters are identified. Of the 2,240 characters, there are forty-five characters of color representing only two percent of the total number of human characters.” Geisel made a point of not beginning to write his stories with a moral in mind, stating that "kids can see a moral coming a mile off." He was not against writing about issues, however; he said that "there's an inherent moral in any story", [86] and he remarked that he was "subversive as hell." [87]Kahn, E. J. Jr. (December 17, 1960). "Profiles: Children's Friend". The New Yorker. Condé Nast Publications . Retrieved September 20, 2008. Bobic, Chrissy (9 March 2021). "6 Dr. Seuss Books Taken off Shelves Due to Racially Insensitive Content". Distractify. All of Dr. Seuss's sculptures display the same themes, which are taxidermy and trophy hunting. Each sculpture takes the form of an imaginary and fantastic creature displayed on a wood mount in the style of a hunting trophy. Most of his pieces in this category make use of authentic animal parts.
