Description

She was the daughter of Zeus; no mother bore her. She sprang from Zeus’s head, full-grown and clothed in armor.

In post- Mycenaean times the city, especially its citadel, replaced the palace as Athena’s domain. She was widely worshipped, but in modern times she is associated primarily with Athens, to which she gave her name. Her emergence there as city goddess, Athena Polias (“Athena, Guardian of the City”), accompanied the ancient city-state’s transition from monarchy to democracy. She was associated with birds, particularly the owl, which became famous as the city’s own symbol, and with the snake. Her birth and her contest with Poseidon, the sea god, for the suzerainty of the city were depicted on the pediments of the Parthenon, and the great festival of the Panathenaea, in July, was a celebration of her birthday. She was also worshipped in many other cities, notably in Sparta. This prophecy claimed that any children born to the women would be smarter and stronger than their father. He swallowed her not knowing that she was already pregnant with his child.

The Greek goddess also has a connection to Medusa. Legend says that she was a young woman who followed Athena and worked in her temple in Athens. Poseidon was so obsessed with her that he ignored her vow of chastity and brutally raped her in the temple.

What better way to reach a kid who doesn’t think he likes to read than to assign him a book that thousands of kids love? For more on my thoughts on assigned reading, see my post Why is required school reading so depressing? The goddess was also associated with the owl and the snake. According to legend, Perseus gave the goddess the head of Medusa after slaying her, and Athena placed Medusa’s head on her shield, turning her enemies into stone. Poseidon. Others say that she loved the new woman as if she was her own daughter.

Unlike his daughter Artemis who was the goddess of the outdoors and often shown as wild and unruly, Athena was more civilized and spent much of her time in urban areas. She did not have much of a relationship with her family. Athena’s association with the acropolises of various Greek cities probably stemmed from the location of the kings’ palaces there. She was thought to have had neither consort nor offspring. She may not have been described as a virgin originally, but virginity was attributed to her very early and was the basis for the interpretation of her epithets Pallas and Parthenos. As a war goddess Athena could not be dominated by other goddesses, such as Aphrodite, and as a palace goddess she could not be violated. She also had a complicated relationship with Ares, especially in regard to war. While Ares had a blood lust and would fight for any cause, she believed in only fighting for causes she believed in and had merit.Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses, was one of the most powerful of the twelve Olympians. Known as the “earth shaker,” Poseidon was the protector of seafarers. One of those sanctuaries is the Spartan Acropolis, which has an epithet dedicated to her. Originally made from bronze to show her connection to metal workers, locals later replaced it. The acropolis also has large bronze and terracotta bells. She also shares some things in common with Minerva from Roman mythology. Many refer to her as a protector or a patron of major cities such as Athens. If you can’t find a small stuffed owl (for wisdom), you could make one out of pom-poms. She also thought about painting an owl on her cheek if we couldn’t find a stuffed animal.
