There are many deterrents on the market, that can be used with varying degrees of success, to create a cat-free zone in your garden. We have tested and approved the Catwatch deterrent. When the sensor inside detects movement it emits a high-pitched sound disliked by most cats (but inaudible to humans). The frequency emitted is unique to cats hearing range, so the Catwatch won't bother other garden wildlife, such as hedgehogs.

So taking the time to set up a ground feeding station will add lots of enjoyment to your garden birdwatching and help support some of our best-loved native species. The latest design of this guardian cage sanctuary has a wider base, to put more distance between your food and large birds like pigeons and doves. This makes this sanctuary even more effective at creating a safe area for small birds to feed in and excluding large birds from your RSPB ground table (sold separately). The key is to choose a model where the feeding platform is not too high off the ground. Many of our smaller ground-feeding birds will be happy on a feeding platform that’s just 4 or 5 foot above ground level. So our Bath Universal Bird Table, for example, is a great option. Not so tall as to be daunting for the smaller ground feeders and open-sided to allow access for bigger birds. Like pigeons and collared doves, the game birds are granivorous and will eat mainly grains and seeds. Water BirdsWe also have a variety of decorative ground feeders for birds that are quite ornamental for undeniable garden charm or you can also choose simple trays that make it easy for the birds to come in and enjoy the food you offer them. Our selection of bird ground feeders are suitable for the full range of our bird food products and you can also mix the foods to give the birds more variety.

Placing your feeders at least 2 metres away from any jumping-off point, such as a tree, shrub or fence will help to keep them at a distance, but they can jump up from the ground, or down from above. In this article, we look at some savvy strategies for keeping the ground feeders, which include some of our favourite garden birds, fat and happy. How Best to Feed Ground Feeding Birds This sounds like a bit of a silly question at first. Ground feeding birds – put some feed on the ground, right? Well, you can simply throw some food on the ground to cater for these birds. But you may run into problems. Attracting rats, exposing your birds to predators, and ending up with a cornfield where your lawn used to be, for example. Anything big enough to allow the birds to feed, easy to move and clean, will do the job. Ground Feeder Housekeeping.

How do I stop big birds eating all my bird food?

Some of our garden birds prefer to feed on the ground because this is where they tend to find their food in the wild. Structure of this simple ground feeder is a metal square bar tied in with the rim of the metal mesh lining. Magpies can be your friend though as they will eat harmful insects and rodents. Are there endangered small birds I should feed? Love them or loathe them; pigeons and collared doves are probably the other leading group of ground feeders you may have in your garden.

And if you have your own cat, put a bell on it – undignified, I know, but at least it gives the birds a fighting chance. Unwanted VegetationDesigned to provide a wide, stable feeding surface, all our ground bird feeder products feature built-in drainage to prevent your bird food getting waterlogged. We also have ground feeder cage designs to help protect and preserve the food you put out for your feathered garden visitors. Made from powder-coated steel, the ground-feeding sanctuary comes with pegs to secure it to the ground and there's room inside for an RSPB ground feeding table (not included). The top opens easily for cleaning and refilling. And also like pigeons, they are quite big birds. They have a wingspan of over a foot and can weigh up to 4 ounces. (Compare this to the blue tit who weighs just half an ounce.) Simplicity at its best with this compact ground feeding tray brought to you by Gardman; square shaped mesh tray for holding different types of bird food.

Firstly its nice wood . there is a wooden bar which divides the tray into 4 eaqual sections. The wooden bars can be removed as well as the acetate tray for cleaning. The best thing this wooden table along with my narrow metal cage stops the pigeons from getting the bird food. Just like any other wildlife feeding station, a ground feeder needs to be properly taken care of to keep the creatures using it safe and healthy and keep your garden looking good. Any large shallow dish will do. I’ve used a large plant pot saucer with a few holes in it for drainage; you could use a storage box lid, an old birdbath, or even a dustbin lid.If you prefer to have a taller bird table that is more of a garden feature, you can still cater to ground feeders with the addition of lower feeding platforms like these. These birds are omnivores, eating worms and other insects during the summer months and moving on to fruits, soft seeds and berries during the autumn and winter. Pigeons and Collared Doves My preferred shop-bought ground feeders are these large wooden models. They don’t offer predator protection, but they are big enough for most birds to feed without spillage, big enough to catch food dropping from hanging feeders and very light and easy to move and clean. We currently have 4 of them in different places around the garden.
