On 21st July 2022 the STA confirmed that from the 2023-24 academic year, KS1 SATs assessments would become non-statutory. Hence it's likely that schools will continue to use past SATs papers to monitor children's progress but they will no longer be required to take formal tests. Don't forget that the 2021 and 2020 SATs papers are not available as those two tests were cancelled. If instructed, a school was required to administer the test within a two week window from the first Monday of "SATs week". KS2 Science used to involve formal tests, now it's a teacher assessment. Following the closure of schools in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the DfE (Department for Education) announced that the 2020 KS2 SATs would be cancelled.

KS2 SATs papers first started in 1995 under the Education Reform Act of 1988. Pupils that took KS1 SATs in 1991 were the first year to take the new KS2 SATs in 1995. Following a long battle with teachers, formal tests were dropped after 2009. KS3 Maths papers (together with English and Science) do still exist but they are written and marked within schools. For further information about KS3 SATs, read our dedicated History of SATs article.Scaled scores could show whether a pupil had reached the 'expected standard', had exceeded it as 'working at greater depth' or had struggled with 'working towards the expected standard'. KS1 SATs cancelled (2020-2021) Level 6 English was split into Level 6 GaPS and Level 6 Reading. Both of these tests were more complex versions of the standard KS2 tests. What happened to Level 6 SATs Papers? These Key Stage 1 tests were in English, Maths and Science and used a combination of formal testing as well as informal teacher assessment to judge each child's attainment against the national curriculum targets. Children were expected to reach 'level 2' by the end of Key Stage 1.

No. 2024 will be the final year of mandatory KS1 SATs papers and while there will be optional tests published in 2024, they will no longer be compulsory. How many papers SATs KS1?

In 2004, under pressure from the NUT, it was announced that formal KS1 SATs would be scrapped from 2005 onwards. Formal KS1 SATs returned in 2016. Informal Teacher Assessment (2005-2015)
