You need something to make the mousse set. Instead of gelatine, I use a strawberry jelly. The resulting mousse doesn't taste overpoweringly synthetic because there's a load of fresh strawberries in there too. Condensed Milk In a jam, you cook the fruit, add the sugar, heat to dissolve, then boil to setting point. Rhubarb & Ginger Jam Ingredients This rhubarb jam recipe is technically a conserve method, but most people use the terms interchangeably. Sterilize Jars And Lids. Properly sterilize your jars and lids before filling them with the jelly to ensure longer shelf life and food safety.

To avoid an over-stuffed pantry, I make my own self-raising flour by adding baking powder to plain flour. either version works in this sponge flan recipe. Make up the jelly with 1/3 boiling water (instead of 1/2 water as usually) and stir to dissolve the jelly cubes in a large metal or glass bowl Step Four – Transfer the rhubarb and sugar mixture to a large saucepan (about 8″ / 20cm diameter) or preserving pan, and simmer gently until all the sugar is dissolved. This will take about 5-10 minutes. It is important to simmer to dissolve the sugar. This will prevent the jam from crystallising at a later stage. The pieces of fruit will still be whole for now.If the jelly has not correctly solidified, you can reboil it the following day to reduce its water content. A favourite from my childhood, this strawberry flan recipe is extremely easy to make and great for entertaining too. Let the jam cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to the prepared jars. I find the easiest way to do this is to ladle the jam into a jug and then pour into the jars, using a jam funnel to catch the drips.

NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank to close at least 172 branches in 2023/24 – here's the full list, plus alternatives Large chunks of ice in your mixture can create clumps, as the jelly around each ice cube sets much faster than the liquid surrounding it. If you have a lot of other food in the fridge and on the top of that you are trying to cool down and set a large jelly mould, your fridge might struggle a bit. If you can, turn down the temperature of your fridge to say 0 Celsius or even lower to lower the temperature of your fridge. If you want to add some fresh herbs into your jam, such as basil, mint, or thyme, do it during the last few minutes of the cooking process to retain their bright flavor. Step Six – Bring the jam to a rolling boil. Be careful to avoid splashes as the mixture is very hot! Of course you can use regular rhubarb in this recipe and still make a delicious jam, but it will not have the same blush pink colour. It’s easy because I cheat! A mousse need something to help it set. It could be egg whites (which I use in Easy Chocolate Mousse) or gelatine, which is fiddly to use. This is an eggless mousse using a jelly to make it set. Once you’ve made this jelly slice recipe from start to finish, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. So simple, even the kids could do the brunt of this jelly slice recipe! Source: Unsplash To speed up the jelly setting process using freezer, make the jelly as normally, leave it to cool down a bit in a room temperature (about 20-30 minutes), then move to fridge (30 minutes) and then move to freezer (60 -90 minutes). Line an 18cm x 30cm rectangular slice tin with baking paper and set it aside. TIP: if you scrunch up the baking paper first, it will sit better in the tin. Homemade jelly should take around 4 hours to set in the fridge. However, it is possible to get jelly to set in as little as 15 minutes if you use a freezer.

Adding Pectin to Jelly for a Quicker, Firmer Set

Pectin, available in liquid and powdered forms, is a cheap, easy-to-find gelling agent made from fruit. It helps jellies and jams to set firm. Rhubarb – I’ve used new season forced rhubarb for the delicate flavour and pretty colour. Any rhubarb will do, however – from the garden, market or even a bag of frozen rhubarb pieces (this is a fantastic budget all year round option). The rhubarb you use will affect the colour of the final jam.
