The 9 bar OPV mod changes the pressure limit in the basket from about 13.5 bars to 9 bars. In theory, it's not a big deal. All the over pressure valve does is limits the pressure in the basket to whatever the spring is made to allow, so you can achieve the same aim with the grind size. In reality, having a 9 bar OPV is a big plus, it really makes things easier, and it's very cheap and easy to install. If we're talking about the espresso machines that are really made for the hands-off user, we're really talking about the Sage Oracle Touch, and you don't need a tamper for that as it tamps for you, using the internal tamping fan. The Oracle also has a tamping fan and takes care of the tamping for you, so you don't need a manual tamper for the Oracle either. In short, this is a really useful item to have in your kitchen. It is also, as you have probably guessed, one of the cheapest items that we’re looking at, so if you’re just after something to do the job, this could be the one for you. I'm starting off with the most obvious tools and accessories for home barista espresso, so if you're already familiar with most of these, and/or you already have most of them, then just scroll down a bit to the likes of the WDT, RDT, Shower Screens, Mods and so on, that may be what you came here to find. Coffee Grinder

I do it, because I quite like doing it, I find it quite therapeutic, and if I've had to go particularly fine with the beans I'm using I think it probably has more of a benefit, as there tends to be more clumps to break up when you grind finer. It’s a nice size as well. Measuring 11.5×11.5×12 centimetres, it is big enough for domestic use, but without being so big as to prove a problem to fit on to your kitchen worktop. With its look and size, it won’t look out of place in almost any kitchen. Whether you need to upgrade your basket depends on your machine, mainly. If you have a machine with a portafilter size that competition baskets are available for, which is most 51, 53, 54, and 58mm group machines, then it's an option you could look into. I'm sure you've heard of the horses for courses saying, which I'm assuming comes from the horse racing world and relates to the fact that some horses do better on certain courses than others – and it's a good analogy to use for figuring out which coffee machine tools and accessories you might need because as I've mentioned, home espresso really isn't a one size fits all affair. At present, Sage are really the only brand in the UK that is properly approaching the hands-off true espresso market, coffee machines that deliver barista cup quality with bean to cup convenience. There are other brands on the market who say that some of their machines are for this market, I've tried them, and as far as I'm concerned, all the other machines I've seen so far that claim to compete with Sage in this area, are only doing this in the marketing blurb!

I've done bottomless portafilter shots, too, trying to see the difference that WDT makes to the shot as it's often easier to see the more subtle channeling (very small spurters) in the shot than it is to taste the difference and to be honest the tests are inconclusive, but as I say, I suspect it does slightly improve consistency, and I certainly have never seen any evidence of WDT having a negative impact. Leveller Measuring 13.4×13.4x13cm it is a decent size – big enough so that you don’t spend a lot of time emptying, but without imposing itself on your kitchen counter. A happy medium. Anyway, just keep in mind that I'm really referring to Sage coffee machine accessories here. If you're looking for accessories for bean to cup coffee machines, the only ones you really need are a milk jug if your machine has a steam wand, and maybe a set of brew scales if you want to aim for a particular ratio (which is possible with Gaggia bean to cup coffee machines, and some other brands which make it clear how much coffee is being ground with each dose setting). Tamper If you have the Barista Touch, you do need to tamp manually, and that comes with a tamper that fits in the magnetic tamper slot. There's nothing stopping you from buying an aftermarket tamper though, there are loads of tampers available these days that are compatible with the Sage 54mm group machines, including hand tampers, and calibrated tampers, but you don't “need” one, as it comes with one.

This is the coffee I drink every day, it's amazing, and I would say that of course, but I'll put my money where my mouth is, with this chunky discount: I'm mentioning these machines, by the way, because some people who're looking in the “hands off” category may enjoy the middle ground between hands-off and home barista, which includes the Barista Touch and Barista Express Impress. Leveller You may think you don't need it because your grinder has a timer and the espresso machine has an automated shot button, you still need scales, 100%. You'll get a different weight of coffee from the same grind time at a different grind size, or even at the same grind size with a different bean. Also, you'll get a different volume of espresso with the exact same pre-programmed shot button even at factory settings, when the grind is different and/or when the beans are different. Hygiene - should you really hit your portafilter off the side of a bin with germs and bacteria in there? It is even worse if the filter falls in and you have to fish it out Please bear in mind that not all manufacturers provide correct imagery and we may put a similar or alternative image to the actual product for illustration purposes only. The actual item you receive may differ from that which is displayed, for example the box may have changed or a model may have been upgraded or changed after we have added the product online.

In my humble opinion, while WDT isn't a huge thing, it won't harm your espresso, it may help it, and it'll probably help with consistency (in terms of consistently slightly reducing channeling), and it's quite a fun thing to do, I find, so I say why not. It may seem a bit technical to introduce brew scales to the mix, but it's really not. All you need to do is tare the portafilter on the scales before you pull the shot, note the dose weight, and then put your cup on the scales and tare before the machine pulls the shot for you, so you can see what volume of espresso you're getting. This allows you to know what ratio you're getting, meaning the amount of espresso vs the amount of ground coffee. I know this isn't a coffee machine gadget, but many people don't understand just how important the quality of their coffee beans is to the quality of their coffee. I installed the one from Shades of Coffee, it was really easy to do, and I'm absolutely useless at DIY, so if I did it, you can probably do it. I wasn't even sure which end of the screwdriver was which. PID (For the Rancilio Silvia and Gaggia Classic) If you're somewhere in between the home barista and the automatic machine user, but you want mega cup quality, then the Sage Barista Touch , the Barista Express Impress, or the all new Sage Barista Touch Impress may be perfect for you.
