The only thing I'd change about this story would be to make it longer -- I really, really didn't want it to end. The premise is gripping, the characters are great, and whole thing is a perfect example of a tactic King often employs -- combining other-worldly monsters with a human threat. In this way The Mist is like The Dome's evil little brother -- it's about the way strangers interact with each other when they're forced into an unnatural micro-society, and the closer-to-home horrors that can spring from that situation. On a side note, Frank Darabont's film adaptation is also well worth a watch (it never seems to get enough credit, but I thought it was great). 2. The Body (from Different Seasons) Sarah emphasizes the added importance of nailing down your central conflict when writing a novella. “Unlike a novel, where you might get away with having a complicated, multi-layered plot, the novella’s shorter length requires you to keep the conflict streamlined.” Your central story thread should always be exerting its gravitational pull. The novella influenced the development of the short story and the novel throughout Europe. [8] In the late 19th century Henry James was one of the first English language critics to use the term novella for a story that was longer and more complex than a short story, but shorter than a novel. [7]

An old agent has a job looking after a few old spies, and one of them dies of natural causes. But, it turns out he had some sort of secret bank account that his watcher didn't know about, and that could be trouble - big trouble, because he could get fired and lose his pension, which might put him out on the streets. So, he has to figure out some way to either spin the situation, or otherwise turn it around, doing it in the typical fashion for these guys - CYA. Like the majority of the stories on this list, 1922 is part of a collection of four novellas. Like the other three tales in Full Dark, No Stars, it's a nasty, fast-paced read about the darker side of the human condition. There's no doubt that it's a great story, but for me -- possibly because I didn't connect with the 1920s setting quite as much -- it was overshadowed by the other tales it's been grouped alongside. 13. Fair Extension (from Full Dark, No Stars)This unofficial prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre reimagines the marriage of Mr. Rochester and the Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway from Cosway’s point of view. Wide Sargasso Sea won the 1967 WH Smith Literary Award for British and Irish fiction and the 2006 Cheltenham Booker Prize for best English-language work published before the existence of the Booker Prize. It was also named to TIME magazine’s list of the 100 best English-language novels since 1923 and Modern Library’s list of the 100 best novels.

Hemingway’s last major work of fiction published during his lifetime follows an aging Cuban fisherman trying to catch a giant marlin. The Old Man and the Sea received the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and contributed to Hemingway earning the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. It wasn't a question you asked because you wanted to know the answer. It was a question you asked when you wanted to crush your underling under foot. This novella about a college romance and class issues in Jewish-American culture was featured in a collection of short fiction of the same name. The collection won the 1960 U.S. National Book Award for Fiction, and the title novella was adapted into a 1969 film.

The Bad Guy Wins: Bachelor, Taverner and MI5 accept Hess’s 'ghost network' list as genuine and decide to use it, as Bachelor suggested, to run a double agent op against Germany. And by doing so they’re unknowingly bringing German Triple Agent Hannah Weiss into their ranks. With a word count that situates the novella somewhere between a short story and a novel, its particular demands make it one of the most exciting yet challenging forms for writers to pen.
