The Origins and Development of Federal Crime Control Policy: Herbert Hoover's Initiatives. Westport, CT: Praeger. Bair interviewed relatives and second- and third-generation Capone family members to try and build a picture that challenged the criminal Capone of popular imagination. But not every family member was willing to talk—many family members had changed their surnames and moved away from Chicago in the generations since the gangster’s death. Some spoke with Bair on the condition of anonymity, and as such, no names are given with some of the quotes Bair sourced. Many of the grandchildren of some of Capone’s former cronies were unwilling to speak with Bair, having promised their parents and grandparents to never discuss “business” outside the family. But the stories she extracts from the distant relatives who did talk help demystify many of the highly fabled stories around Capone—especially those that concern his sexual exploits, his kindness and charitableness, and the importance he placed on his family life.

Capone spent the last few years of his life in solitude at his retreat in Florida. On January 21, 1947, Capone suffered a major stroke. Despite surviving it, he contracted pneumonia during recovery and went into cardiac arrest just a few days later, on January 25th, 1947. As a result of the cardiac arrest, in combination with his other ailments, Capone died at his home surrounded by family. He was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. The film plays with the concept of the American dream by having its protagonist twist it beyond recognition. Searching for new opportunities after leaving Cuba for the United States, he discovers that the life he tried to leave behind won't be so easy to escape from. Dissatisfied with the boredom of a law-abiding life, Tony becomes embroiled progressively deeper and deeper in the world of crime boss Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). As he realizes that life outside the law is what he does best, Tony aspires to become the greatest practitioner of his craft that the city of Miami has ever seen. Capone was sent to Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary in May 1932, aged 33. Upon his arrival at Atlanta, Capone was officially diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhoea. He was also experiencing withdrawal symptoms from cocaine addiction, the use of which had perforated his nasal septum. Capone was competent at his prison job of stitching soles on shoes for eight hours a day, but his letters were barely coherent. He was seen as a weak personality, and so out of his depth dealing with bullying at the hands of fellow inmates that his cellmate, seasoned convict Red Rudensky, feared that Capone would have a breakdown. Rudensky was formerly a small-time criminal associated with the Capone gang and found himself becoming a protector for Capone. The conspicuous protection by Rudensky and other prisoners, drew accusations from less friendly inmates and fueled suspicion that Capone was receiving special treatment. No solid evidence ever emerged, but it formed part of the rationale for moving Capone to the recently opened Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary off the coast of San Francisco, in August 1934. [112] On June 23, 1936, Capone was stabbed and superficially wounded by fellow Alcatraz inmate James C. Lucas. [113]Big Bill Thompson". Encyclopedia of Chicago. Judge James Herbert Wilkerson who also presided over Ralph Capone’s case was familiar with Capone and his antics. When US Attorney George E. Q. Johnson agreed to a plea bargain that only gave Capone a couple of years in prison, Judge Wilkerson overruled it, refusing to allow Capone to plead guilty in hopes of receiving a reduced sentence. The Judge ruled that while he wouldn’t accept the guilty plea due to Capone’s lawyer admitting the guilt instead of Capone himself, he would admit the confession into evidence on the grounds that anyone making a statement to the government did so at their own risk, including an authorized legal representative of Capone.
