Description

I am sorry to hear that your project did not turn out as expected, I suspect this may be due to the high oil content in dense hardwoods such as Iroko. All traces of grease, wax and polish must be completely removed prior to applying Diamond Glaze Varnish

Test a small clean area first, sand with 120 grit abrasive and dust off. Apply a test patch of Diamond Glaze - if the Glaze leaves uncoated spots, the surface is contaminated and needs to be stripped. If the film formed is unblemished, leave for 24 hours then test for adhesion by scraping with a coin. If the surface is sound, continue with preparation and priming as described above. New or bare wood: Sand the surface in the direction of the grain to remove any imperfections etc and remove residues with a damp lint free cloth. To get the best results, ensure surfaces to be varnished are sound, clean and dry. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.

Floor Sanding: For even appearance, prepare the floor by using an industrial drum sander and edge sander, available from a local hire shop. Always sand in the direction of the grain. A belt sander or orbital sander can be used for smaller areas. Remove all dust from floor and surrounding areas using suitable vacuum equipment. We recommend always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin. Stir thoroughly, it is recommended that a small test area is applied before treating the entire surface to ensure compatibility.

Whilst the he Dulux Diamon Glaze varnish is a very popular product, Iroko tends to be naturally high in oil which in turn can cause adhesion issues if varnishes are applied. We recommend to degrease the wood with methylated spirits to allow varnish to adhere or oil to absorb. Additionally, if the varnish has not yet cured, if moisture gets in between the finish, this can cause a milky bloom to appear and it can take a while for the trapped moisture to evaporate.

After cleaning or stripping a test area, place a drop of water on the bare wood - if it forms a bead, wax is still present and Diamond Glaze should not be used without thorough preparation. If the water disperses, carry out the application/adhesion tests above before proceeding with cleaning, stripping and priming. A. Diamond Glaze is known for its exceptional durability and resistance to wear and tear. It provides a tough, protective coating that helps to extend the lifespan of the surfaces it is applied to. This makes it particularly suitable for high-traffic areas or surfaces that are prone to frequent use and abrasion. The varnish has excellent scratch and stain resistance properties, making it ideal for surfaces that require added protection. It helps to prevent scratches, scuffs, and stains, which can be particularly beneficial for wooden floors, furniture, and other surfaces that are susceptible to damage.

Rub down the thoroughly cleaned surface with 120 grit abrasive, vacuum and leave to settle overnight. Remove dust from the surface with a damp cloth and allow to dry. Prime the surface with one coat of Diamond Glaze Clear Gloss. Leave overnight to dry then lightly sand with the grain using 120 grit abrasive and remove dust before finishing with a further 2-3 coats. Surfaces should be protected from water, steam, spillages and hard stress, for example abrasion or polishing, for a minimum of 5 days after application. Sand the surface in the direction of the grain to remove any imperfections etc. and remove residues with a damp lint free cloth. Faulty Items New or bare wood: Sand the surface in the direction of the grain to remove any imperfections etc. and remove residues with a damp lint free cloth. Seal all new or bare wood by applying one coat of Clear Gloss Diamond Glaze, to help reduce variations in absorbency which can lead to differences in colour and sheen, particularly when working with coloured topcoats of Diamond Glaze.

After degreasing the wood, we often recommend application of very thin oils such as Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin 1101 which are especially designed for wood types such as iroko to penetrate into the grain and protect the wood without adhesion issues. Test areas also help ascertain the absorption of the product. Light foot traffic is allowed after 24 hours but to prevent possible damage to floor while the full mechanical resistance develops, avoid heavy wear and do not replace carpet or rugs or move furniture for at least 7 days after application. Apply 2 or 3 coats evenly and consistently, taking care to keep the 'wet edge' alive and finish off along the grain.
