Description

Hardinge is the expert in precise part length control, pioneering the Dead-Length 5C and 16C collets for high-production manufacturing. Our Sure-Grip Expanding Collet Systems feature built-in part length control with a double-angle design, ensuring precise workpiece lengths by securely locating them against the arbor face or a machineable work stop. This stability results in heavier cuts, improved surface finishes, and tighter tolerances, making it easy to machine long parts. We also offer custom Sure-Grip Collets for special spindle, sub-spindle, mill table, Swiss, and multi-spindle machine applications. You can even get splined or serrated surfaces for unique grips or recessed draw-plug styles for short gripping challenges. A ring mandrel, or a triblet, is a cylindrical, tapered tool used in forging, shaping, and reshaping workpieces (mostly rings). Ring mandrels are mainly used in the jewelry industry. They can also be used for measurements if they have ring sizes on them. Other mandrels PTG produce and supply precision expanding mandrels capable of automatic clamping in component bores, achieving the highest accuracy and holding power to resist the cutting forces imposed on the work piece. Several forces act on the workpiece to make it deflect away from the center, which makes the usage of mandrels necessary. A mandrel is a cylindrical, tapered rod (shaft or a spindle) that helps hold or shape the workpiece. Mandrels are typically made of steel and are used in hollow jobs on lathes, industrial, and jewelry machines. They shouldn’t be confused with an arbor, which holds tools rather than workpieces.

The step mandrel isn’t plain like plain mandrel but has step collars of different diameters fitted with it. This allows it to be used for various diameters of workpieces. Step mandrel is used when the inner portion of the workpiece is in the form of steps, which makes step mandrel the right choice. Gang MandrelMandrels used for holding make the workpiece rotate around the center only, increasing the job’s accuracy. Meanwhile, the ring mandrels are used to forge or reshape rings. Mandrels make the workpiece rotate around the center only, increasing the jobs’ accuracy. Without proper support of the workpiece, there’s a chance for the job operation (e.g., drilling, boring etc.) to fail. A Gang mandrel has a fixed collar at one end and a movable collar threaded at the other end. This type of mandrel allows hollow workpieces to be placed between the fixed collar and the movable collar, followed by tightening it with a washer nut. Gripping a workpiece by its inner diameter (ID) rather than its outer diameter (OD) is a workholding option that many job shops fail to consider when turning or grinding parts. However, this technique offers a number of advantages, especially in the machining of workpieces with complex surfaces. Kitagawa Europe produces a series of CNC expanding mandrels designed for a range of spindle types that offer more flexibility in workholding than people might think. The expanding mandrels can be used to grip any workpiece that has a suitable inner bore diameter and which lends itself to being completely machined on the outside. The suitability of a workpiece’s inner bore is application-specific; We generally advise that there be, at most, a 3:1 length-to-diameter ratio of the inner bore. However, it is possible to accommodate higher ratios depending on a variety of factors, such as the type of material being machined or the aggressiveness of the cut.

Forging and reshaping: Ring mandrels (also called triblets) are used in the jewelry industry for forging and reshaping rings on them. Gang mandrel is similar to a step mandrel, except it allows multiple jobs to be machine simultaneously. Its ability to handle multiple workpieces simultaneously reduces the machining time and is thus used in mass manufacturing. Collar Mandrel There are many specialized mandrels out there that are designed to fix specific problems. Following are some of these mandrels: These models utilise the same precision mandrels, expanding sleeves and locators as our CNC Expanding Mandrels.Mandrels used for holding the workpiece in place have different types and find their uses in the industrial, lathe, and woodworking machines. Following are the types of mandrels used for holding the workpiece: Solid Mandrel This article aimed to provide general information regarding mandrels. Mandrels are either used to hold a workpiece or reshape it. Specialized mandrels may be for specific purposes. A solid mandrel is a cylindrical, tapered bar whose one side is larger in diameter than the other. It is the simplest type of mandrel generally available in most machine shops. It is also known as the plain mandrel. A great option for low/medium-volume production. For high-production environments, use the standard KEM series

Expansion bushings, if used, should be cleaned and cared for in the same manner as a normal mandrel. Bullring mandrels:This mandrel consists of a live center with interchangeable rings that can accommodate a wide variety of large-diameter parts. Mandrels are typically slightly tapered to provide support during machining, so a solid frictional grip between the mandrel and the hole wall is in place when pressed into a previously machined hole. Side-actuated with an included square-drive key means that this unit can accommodate parts with blind bores as well as those with thru-holes. Expanding mandrel has a slightly complex construction. It has a mounted bush over a tapered arbor, which has a tapered hole with three longitudinal cuts. Two slots are cut nearly through, while the third cut is of full length. This construction allows the expansion of split bushing within a limit.Universal location spigot mount enables this ID workholding system to be easily moved from machine to machine as jobs require. The screwed mandrel has a fixed collar and an open threaded end to allow screwing threaded workpieces for machining purposes. This mandrel type is used when the inner part of the workpiece is threaded. Cone Mandrel

We provide a wide selection of Collet Style Expanding Mandrels, manufactured by industry leading partner Hardinge, offering solutions to difficult machining problems for turning, milling, grinding, assembly and automation applications. We guarantee exact workpiece lengths, even for particularly long parts, as our bespoke line of mandrels have extremely high stability. The line is standardised on most common gripping ranges and spindle types, and the company maintains a database of machine tool spindles and drawtubes to enable customization of drawtube connectors. Additionally, Kitagawa Europe offers a number of specialized systems to fit each company’s individual needs. Kitagawa Europe can supply systems with multiple expanding sleeves or mandrels that can support workpieces with IDs as large as 635mm. Although typically used in turning or grinding applications, our expanding mandrels can be adapted for use on milling machines with special fixtures as well. Collet style mounts in any machine or fixture that accepts 5C, 16C or 3J collets using existing spindle or adapter

These models utilize the same precision mandrels, expanding sleeves and locators as our CNC Expanding Mandrels The lathe dog should be secured to the end of the mandrel rather than on the smooth surface of the mandrel taper. Availability of multiple sleeves for work with greater length-to-diameter ratios, eliminating wobble and chatter. The Cone mandrel has a fixed cone at one end and a sliding cone at the other. The sliding cone has threads and can be adjusted or removed using a nut. This type of mandrel allows it to hold different sizes of workpieces between the two cones. Expanding Mandrel
