NES Pharmacy manages the educational infrastructure for trainee pharmacists in Scotland through the Foundation Training Year (FTY) programme. The main components of the FTY programme include; a centralised recruitment process, a standardised training programme and quality assurance of the national programme. Scottish Pharmacy Experiential Learning' is funded by Scottish Government and organised in partnership between Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde, NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and other pharmacy stakeholders. A service that enables women aged 16-64 to be assessed for UTIs and to be provided with antibiotics if indicated.

We have a large number of specialist pharmacists with experience in audit, drug evaluation and drawing up prescribing guidelines, formularies and shared care policies. Pharmacists run several outpatient clinics including anti-coagulation, high-risk medicines, neurology, cardiology, HIV and hepatology. In addition to our centralised service, the department has adopted a model of patient-centred pharmacy – whereby pharmacists are based on the ward, generally supported by ward-based clinical pharmacy technicians. The programme aims to build in a progressive manner a common set of behaviours and skills required by all pharmacy technicians. It is designed to increase confidence, competence and capability. Pharmacy technicians completing the programme will develop a systematic approach to practice within their defined roles. Caduceus, a Greek word for “herald’s staff” has a complicated history, and meaning. The symbol is a staff with wings representing Mercury (Roman) or Hermes (Greek), messenger of the Gods and also God of commerce. There is also a serpent intertwined with the staff. Quality control – this service can help with problems requiring the analysis of medicines or raw materials. A medical gas testing service is provided and the department is responsible for co-ordinating drug recalls initiated by the Committee on Safety of Medicines. Getting your prescriptionThe bowl of Hygieia has roots traced to Greek mythology. Hygieia, the daughter of Aesculapius, was the Greek Goddess of health and wellness. Her symbol shows a serpent drinking from a bowl or chalice. The bowl is wide and shallow, but with a long stem. This is the symbol used as the pharmacy logo in Hungary. If your hospital doctor prescribes new or different medication, he/she will either write and inform your GP (who will give you a prescription) or give you a prescription to take to the hospital pharmacy.

NES Pharmacy provides support to pharmacy technicians through a Vocational Training Foundation programme, designed to build in a progressive manner a common set of behaviours and skills required by all pharmacy technicians. We also support pharmacy technicians to progress towards the Professional Development Award (PDA) in Assessment and Supply of Individual Patients' Medicines at SCQF Level 7. The Sore Throat Test and Treat service offers patients with sore throat symptoms to access clinical screening, clinical assessment and appropriate treatment from a community pharmacy. The service is provided by accredited pharmacists, and patients are advised to confirm availability before travelling to a specific pharmacy.
