Description

Bacardi rums use only three main ingredients; molasses, yeast, and water. Quality molasses from the finest sugar cane plantations are fermented in water with patented Bacardi yeast (discovered by Don Facundo Bacardi Masso), then distilled and aged. What Does Bacardi Rum Taste Like? Facundo’s wife, Doña Amalia notices a colony of fruit bats hanging in the rafters of the distillery and recognizes their importance to the Spanish and Cuban Taíno indigenous people as symbols of good health, family unity, and good fortune. She suggests adopting the bat as the symbol of BACARDÍ rum and soon locals began to ask for “el ron del murcielago” – the rum of the bat.

Manuel Jorge Cutillas will never forget Oct. 14, 1960. "I woke up by my alarm radio listening to a list of names.... Compania Ron Bacardi, S.A., was on it, but I didn't know why because I hadn't heard the beginning of the news," he recounts. Cutillas was then a chemical engineer for the company and a lecturer at the university in Santiago. "I immediately suspected that what we were afraid of had happened. It was the famous decree of October 14 in which all the Cuban properties were confiscated by the government."

For those in the United States who want to get a sense of the accomplishments of Don Emilio--which include taking the first Egyptian mummies to Cuba--and of other Bacardis throughout history, the place to go is the company's building in Miami, itself noteworthy for its architecture. On the ground floor, in what used to house an art gallery, is the Bacardi museum en el exilio. Jose "Tito" Argamasilla Bacardi, a great-grandson of Don Emilio, led the way in putting together the exhibit, which holds the only photograph of Don Facundo Bacardi y Maso known to exist. The display is a labor of love and the work of family and friends who were asked to look for relics of the family's and company's history. There is even a collection of vintage Cuban cigar bands, including a Romeo y Julieta that cross-promotes Bacardi.

Alfredo Piedra grew up in Miami and went to college at American University in Washington, D.C. While there, Piedra took a class in marketing during which he was introduced to the company for which he would go to work in 1978. "My professor used Bacardi as an example of the ideal multinational corporation," Piedra recalls. "So here I am, a Cuban immigrant in Washington, D.C., having a professor profess to us what a great global corporation this Bacardi is. They're originally from Cuba and so on and so forth. And I'm in awe. I am Cuban and I was proud to see a successful, globally successful, Cuban corporation." The factory is less than 50% of its production capacity, the investment required is less and “the government requires production but gives nothing”, according to the workers. Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba from 1939 until shortly after the Cuban Revolution. He lived at Finca Vigía, in the small town of San Francisco de Paula, located very close to Bacardi's Modelo Brewery for Hatuey Beer in Cotorro, Havana. Bacardí rum, Grey Goose vodka, Patrón Tequila, Dewar's Blended Scotch whisky, Bombay Sapphire gin, Martini & Rossi vermouth and sparkling wines, Eristoff vodka, Cazadores blue agave tequila, Angel's Envy Bourbon and more

DISCOVER OUR STORY.

Now imagine that after a decade of working hard to save up enough to run your own wine business and starting a family with your wonderful wife, and strong matriarch, Doña Lucia ‘Amalia’ Victoria Moreau, you feel like all is right with your world again. That is, until two devastating earthquakes hit your city and the outbreak of cholera that comes afterwards claims the lives two of your children and countless others. To top it off, after the outbreak is over, you find your business looted and have to file for bankruptcy. (Ok, this is getting heavy, but we promise things look up, don’t worry!). Such are the advantages of working for a privately held company. An investment can be made for the long term. This is particularly important because the distilled spirits market in the United States has been down for a number of years. Piedra believes that the trend might continue, but that in 2000 it will start to reverse because of demographic realities and more favorable attitudes toward alcoholic beverage consumption.

Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and Felix Candela's Industrial Buildings". UNESCO World Heritage Centre . Retrieved 18 April 2010. Be the first to use oak barrels to purposefully age the rum and develop specific flavor pro-files (a process which is more commonly known these days for brandies and whiskies). We call this today Undisturbed Tropical Ageing – which sounds like a very nice way to spend your retirement years if you ask us… Invent the parallel process creating one rum base with intense flavour, aroma and character, and another much lighter and more delicate which are then blended together. (This process enabled our hero to produce a range of rums varying from the very light and delicate to richer and more flavourful rums.) The process involves parallel fermentation, distillation, ageing and filtering. Well, there is no real value, I mean, no sort of value that we like to say, 'This company is worth so much,' because the shares don't have a value as far as the marketplace is concerned," Cutillas says earnestly.
