Description

It’s that date in the calendar when schools across the country come alive with the sheer joy of literature - World Book Day. The books were written in the early 1970s and set in a post-industrial town, which is at times depicted as cold and daunting, but despite Tim’s challenging situation he’s always open-minded and keen to help anyone who might need his assistance, whether they’re adults, children, animals or the mysterious, ghost-like hidden people that he starts to see when he first finds a magical key in his attic. Starting secondary school can be SERIOUSLY stressful – it’s bad enough for Lottie Brooks that her BFF Molly has just moved to the other side of the world, but to make matters worse she has the wrong pencil case, she hasn’t got a bra yet, and the whole class has started calling her KitKat Chunky. She’s just about ready to die of embarrassment and she’s only just started. Brie grew up doing treasure hunts around her island town with her mother, and these precious memories have been extra-special since her mother passed away a couple of years ago. But on Brie’s twelfth birthday, a new treasure hunt begins, as a series of letters takes her on an adventure she never expected. Schooldays at St Clare's are never dull for twins Pat and Isabel O'Sullivan in Enid Blyton's much-loved boarding school series.

So obviously, being in my 30s, I'm not the intended audience for the story of Lottie but I feel working in a primary school, especially in a year 6 class, gives me some insights into their mind. And I want to start this review by saying I think all year six girls should read this book before going to senior school. The message of this book is so important and I really think that age group need to hear it.While Finding Junie Kim offers all the growth and honesty and hope that books for kids should, it also transcends a typical underdog story. It gives an honest and beautiful look at what it takes to fight through challenges, and why we all deserve to be the heroes in our own stories.

Lottie brooks is 11 turning 12 and her life is about to officially start. She begins to experience the life of a year 7 and all the worries that come along with it. After her one and only friend Holly moved to Australia it feels like the end of the world for her. Welcome to the gingerbread house blog. I'm Jenny, London mum of a teen and a tween. Bookworm, craft and family lifestyle blogger, occasional baker of gingerbread.Mia hides her real feelings as she takes care of her disastrously disorganised mother, until her absent father drops a bombshell: She is actually Princess Amelia of Genovia. Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Jennifer L. Holm, Invisible Emmie is a humorous and surprising debut graphic novel by Terri Libenson, creator of the internationally syndicated, Reuben Award-winning comic strip The Pajama Diaries. This is the story of two totally different girls— Sami is a fun-loving kid who lives in beautiful Damascus, Syria. He enjoys doing all the things kids love to do when they are thirteen years old - he hangs out with his best friend, he plays video games, and he thinks about football. But when his family is caught up in a bombing at a shopping mall, his entire life is thrown into turmoil as he begins the harrowing journey to the UK as a refugee to escape danger.

My daughter loves this style of book which is written as a diary. Although she loves to read she also loves illustrations and the drawings of Katie Kirby are very funny and help illustrate the book well. My daughter is 10 and I thought she was the perfect age to read the book. It’s funny with lots of laugh out loud moments and we enjoyed reading it together. In fact my daughter loved it so much that we’ve put the first two books on her wishlist! Her growth through the book is huge and she ends her diary with the message that you shouldn't do anything you don't want to do just because someone tells you to and actually it's okay to just be you. Which I think every preteen (or tween as some in my class like to be referred as!) needs to hear. She openly discusses what her body is going through (or not going through) during puberty and comparing it to everyone else. From an adult point of view, I liked how her mum talked about it with her and celebrated her changing body and didn't make her feel like it was something to feel shameful about. We need more body positive talk! In a village in the Dominican Republic, Ana Rosa dreams of being a writer; a dangerous dream in a place where words are feared. She knows it would be safer to keep her words inside, but it is impossible not to write poems and stories about the music of the ocean, dancing at fiestas and on the beach with her Papi, a first crush, or her brother’s search for a future. The pacing was brilliant - it wasn't too slow or repetitive, and it had just enough action to make it exciting and realistic.

Tim’s parents have died, and he lives with his Aunt May and a number of lodgers who rent rooms out in their house. Some of the lodgers are nice but some are very unpleasant. Aunt May doesn’t have very much money and Tim often notices that the lodgers get all the best food, leaving little for him. The character of Lottie is so relatable too. I know I'm years away from my own childhood but my memories are pretty strong. I know all too well the realities of so called 'popular girls' (although in my school it was actually both the girls and the boys who were equally mean) making fun of me for the slightest thing. And although this is a humorous book that had me laughing out loud in some places, there were also some emotional moments where Lottie is crying in bed. The book is primarily a tale about the pressures a young person feels as self-awareness, other people’s perception of you, and fitting in, becomes all-important. When she is caught by Charley, the most popular and prettiest girl, and the ‘influencer’ in school, rummaging through supermarket bins for perfectly good food, this is the lowest point in Laurie’s life. However, the ensuing conversation leads Charley to learn of Laurie’s ‘Beauty in the kitchen’ profile, where she promotes her natural skin-products she has made from fresh foods. These appear to be the perfect products to win the school’s enterprise competition and so Charley assumes Laurie’s co-operation and partnership, leaving Laurie to abandon her friends, who go it alone. A fortnight of compromising begins, all which places her on an uncomfortable and chaotic journey as she tries to keep pace with Charley and her manipulation, whilst losing out on her relationships with those that matter – her family and friends. There are two boys who are main characters in the story too, and interesting ones, but its little sister Roo (really Lucy) who is my hero.

What's it like to grow up online and have every tantrum, every spot - even your first period - broadcast to hundreds of thousands of followers? Watch Tom Fletcher give his answers before making your This or That choice. Really think about your answer. For example… would you rather play chess with Cruella de Vil or Captain Hook? Why did you choose your answer? Would Captain Hook have some exciting stories about the high seas, or do you want to persuade Cruella to choose faux animal skins in her designs? Sami’s resilience throughout this story is truly admirable and this book is a thoughtful insight into the lives of refugees arriving on the shores on the UK. I was a big fan of the Georgia Nicholson books when I was younger and this had the exact same vibe only it was more up-to-date. It's going to be another bumper year of Puffin books. From magical adventures and hilarious fictional diaries to body-positive picture books,we've put together a list of the stories to watch out for in 2021.
