Projectors make outdoor movie nights easier than ever, but they have to be smaller and more portable than projectors intended for permanent home theater installations. This projector can be used on the ceiling, and nothing can beat the image quality it delivers. Hannah Tralys - Full-time researcher and tester at Trustmyreview - Written on July 13, 2023 Even if you have one or two good televisions, you can take your entertainment room to the next level with a home theater projector. With a home theater projector, you can get a large screen for a fraction of the price of a large TV, which is perhaps the best part.In this case, we're focusing more on the "go-to" projectors. Mini projectors can be installed permanently or semi-permanently, but for the most part, they're not designed to be.Basically, they go where they are needed. The best mini projectors of 2023 are super bright, super sharp and can give you a crisp, clear image wherever you need it. In a dark room, you can still get a decent picture, but if you’re expecting true cinema quality or something that will work with the curtains wide open, you may end up feeling disappointed. With multiple styles and high quality upgrades in each, it's simply unbeatable. Here are the best mini projectors you can buy today, you can read why you should choose each of them :

Home cinema doesn’t get more portable than the Anker Nebula Capsule. Sure, you can buy a smartphone-sized projector, but this one gives you a relatively bright 480p picture, despite its 100 ANSI lumens output, and you get good built-in audio to boot. Anker makes its own mini-Bluetooth speakers, and we suspect the same drivers and technology are used here. As a result, you get a fairly convincing 360˚ sound with a bit more space and a spot of boom and rumble, although distortion creeps in as you push up the volume. Q. How dark does a room need to be for a projected image to look good? Will I still be able to see the image if the lights are on? DLP: Short for “digital light processing,” this is a technology that’s based on microscopic mirrors. DLP projectors usually feature bulbs that can last anywhere between 2,000 and 5,000 hours. These projectors are strong performers, typically with excellent 3D support, and the preferred option for home theatre enthusiasts.

The portable design of the NexTab™ Projector 4K lets you take your favorite shows wherever you go! You can finally enjoy a bright and vibrant home theater that will make movie nights incredibly breathtaking! LED: These projectors use light-emitting diodes, and much like regular LED lightbulbs, projectors with LED bulbs last much longer – sometimes up to 20,000 hours. LED-based projectors require no maintenance, but they do have an Achilles’ heel: they’re not as bright as DLP or LCD models. LED projectors are ideal for small- to medium-size rooms and users who prefer maintenance-free setup.

A 4K pixel shifting projector uses imagers that contain are less than 8.3 megapixels, but every pixel’s image is rapidly shifted allowing each one to do the job of multiple pixels. When it comes to pixel shifting, faster is better. The pixel wobbling is done so fast that it fools your eyes into seeing up to four times the projector’s native resolution. Throw is a big deal with projectors. Because of the way they work, by beaming an image onto a flat surface, the size of the projected picture will be determined by the distance between the projector and screen. All projectors have what’s called a “throw ratio”, which determines how big the picture will be at any given distance, and some are what’s called short-throw projectors, meaning they’re designed to give a bigger picture even from a distance of one or two metres. As a short throw projector you’ll only need to keep it a few feet away from a wall or projector screen for a good image – whether that’s behind your sofa or in front of you – though you’ll need an ultra-short throw model if you want it right up against the wall. Grab one that’s longer than you think you’ll need. It never hurts to have the extra flexibility in case your placement plans change. Audio solution Manage your expectations. You can’t expect the kind of experience you’d get from a good, dedicated home cinema projector. For one thing, most of these models use a low-resolution DLP chip to create the picture that’s beamed to the screen. In many cases, this is a standard-definition chip, giving you the same 848 x 480 resolution as a movie on DVD.

You’ll need a screen for your projected image, and there are hundreds of different options available. If you have room for a projector screen, buy one that can be pulled down from the ceiling. If you don’t have room for a dedicated screen, consider using projector paint on a bare wall. Projector paint creates a reflective surface that’s ideal for a minimalist setup. Extra bulbs Lens shift: Occasionally, you’ll need to adjust your projector’s image to make sure the picture isn’t crooked or change the height of the picture. Lens shift is a feature that allows you to adjust the lens and screen placement without physically adjusting the projector. This is a huge convenience because manual lens adjustments can be clunky and imprecise. The slim remote is a masterclass in sleek design, with a metal casing that stays cold to the touch and has the good sense to limit things to a handful of buttons (power, Google Assistant, settings, home screen, return, and volume controls). The pull-out mechanism for the batteries is a bit flimsy, mind, and you’ll have to be careful to reinsert it correctly.

When viewed from a normal viewing distance, it is difficult to differentiate between a 4K pixel shift image and an image projected on a native 4K projector. It is only when you do a side-by-side comparison between a true 4K projector versus a pixel-shifting projector using test patterns that the resolution difference is truly noticeable. Wireless HDMI: Depending on where you place your 4K projector, you might end up with a tripping hazard: a long HDMI cable snaking around your viewing area. If you’re ready to ditch cables entirely, opt for a 4K projector that supports wireless HDMI – a new technology that can transmit a video signal from any HDMI source like a cable box or streaming box without the need for an extended wire. Resolution is limited to 854 x 480, and the brightness is a low-ish 150 lumens, so you’ll need a dark room to enjoy the projected image; nevertheless, the colour performance isn’t bad at all. Its speaker does a decent job of providing emergency audio that isn’t too thin and tinny, plus, if you want to boost audio output, you can hook up a Bluetooth speaker.Even the best projectors aren't the best for gaming, but there are some truly great gaming projectors out there, and the Optoma UHD38 claims the throne of best gaming projector of them all.It fully supports 4K and 1080p gaming, offers a high contrast ratio and extreme brightness that makes games look bright, crisp and colorful. One thing that most 4K projector marketing materials leave out is that the projector speakers are usually terrible. That’s by design. Most projectors are made to be positioned far from the viewer, so they’re built on the assumption that you’ll be providing your own audio solution.
