Description

I'm so glad to see a such a novel (heh) concept so well executed. There's friendship, there's action, there's high stakes, there's twists and turns that are surprising but make sense. You love to see it, and I love to read it.

The Callers by Kiah Thomas is a story of Quintus Octavius; a boy expected to have inherited the rare ability to Call things into being, having been born into a family of callers. Everything changes for Quin when he discovers that the items being called are not being created, but taken from somewhere else. When we chunk a conversation it means we break it down into manageable parts. Big chunks are used for general ideas, the big picture so to say; small chunks are used for detail and precise information, the minute detail.Officers were deployed to investigate the allegations, but were able to use CCTV footage to prove that none of them happened. Howarth told her that he had a bomb in each shoe and one in his bag, and that he was going to blow up the Arndale centre. At a time of nationally increased 999 volumes, misuse of the emergency number isn’t acceptable and won’t be tolerated. Now I may be wrong, but in some scenes you can see a tank full of fish, and in others there aren't any. Some people just never seem to come up for air. They could, as the saying goes, ‘Talk for England’ or any other country that would allow their representation.

The Callers by Kiah Thomas | Goodreads

Strange, gripping drama for the first 90% of the movie. McDowell plays his character with a weird calm intensity that keeps your eyes glued to him. Madolyn Smith-Osborne, a terrific actress here and someone who I never heard of, plays a woman who looks like she's about to come unhinged at any moment. Madolyn plays a woman who has a cabin in the woods, she's widowed and her daughter is away. Malcolm is is the 'caller' who needs to borrow her phone because his car has a flat tire. The two of them engages into a series of mind games with one another. Tensions builds between them while the audience tries to decide who is a murderer. Is the caller a police detective or a ghost of her dead husband? Nothing is normal, both characters act very strange. We never even learn their names. Luis Guzman and Stephen Moyer give solid supporting performances too, it's nice not to see old Bill Compton all broody and serious, and Luiz is just awesome no matter what. The chart position for her 2004 single Get It On, the subject of which has become an internet meme. The old, familiar movie plot of a stranger asking to come into someone's home to use their phone has been done so often you'd think people would have wised up by now, based on the horrific reality of well-publicized home invasions.

Anyway, regarding the movie, there are only two actors in the movie and it all takes place at some remote location in the woods. The dialogue and acting are superb and truly engaging. If you are looking for suspense, this is an excellent choice since there is plenty of it. The only thing with this movie is that you need to be prepared for a very unusual ending which may be a let down if you expect something else, which you probably would, because nobody could guess the ending, it comes totally out of left field. However the ending is what makes this movie truly unusual, as you might wish you watched it in reverse! In fact after watching the ending, I'm sure many would elect to watch the movie once again to observe how it all leads to that very unexpected and unusual ending. I think I will, and I don't really like to watch movies again since time is short and there are other movies to watch. In this instance the conversation has been controlled by ‘chunking up’ up to the purpose or overriding point of the information exchange – the need for a call-out. The caller has been diverted from adding to the statement because the call handler swiftly moved to the next stage – booking the call. These can be calls from someone claiming to be the 'undercover police', claiming that they're investigating a member of staff at your bank and asking for your card details. The police would never ask you to take part in an investigation like this. Computer or mobile phone repair scams The calls were described as being ‘aggressive, abusive, threatening and on occasions simply incoherent’.Thank you to NetGalley, Chronicle Books, and Kiah Thomas for the eARC copy of this book!
