Description

Like Father, Unlike Son: All past Willoughbys parents, aside from being adventurous and creative, were good parents who valued raising their children. For some reason, those good qualities skip a generation with the current Mr. Willoughby (and by extension Mrs. Willoughby). Hard Truth Aesop: Just because a family is related by blood doesn't mean that they will look out for you in the way that they should be, and it's better to have an unconventional family that treats you kindly than to have a blood-related yet neglectful one. This is compounded by the fact that in most animated children's films which portray Abusive Parents, the abusers tend to be step-parents, adoptive parents, or distant relatives, while biological parents are often put onto a pedestal or have their worst traits portrayed sympathetically. note This is likely to avoid pissing off Moral Guardians and parents in the audience who won't appreciate the notion that kids should disobey parents under any circumstances, even if the parents are portrayed as abusive, because they think it will encourage disobedience in their kids. Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby are the main characters' biological parents and are never given any reasonable justification for why they treat the kids the way that they do, and the Willoughbys being adopted by Nanny and Captain Mel is seen as an unambiguous Good Ending. Their parents are excited by the brochure and leave immediately. Tim tries to take care of his siblings alone, but flounders until the nanny hired by their parents arrives. The nanny, Linda, proves to be much warmer and more caring than their parents, and Jane and the Barnabys warm up to her almost immediately; Tim, however, remains distrustful. When Linda learns about Ruth, she rushes to the candy factory with the children in tow. Melanoff explains that he originally intended to hand the baby over to the Department of Orphan Services, but grew attached to her; Linda is assured that Ruth will be well cared for in the factory.

Mr Willoughby: I'm your father, and that sweet woman that you insulted with your rude birth is mother. If you need love, I beg of you, find it elsewhere. Thank you. The nanny turned and looked at them. Wearing her flowered apron, she was standing at the stove, stirring the oatmeal with a wooden spoon. Both Sides Have a Point: Jane has every right to be mad at Tim for calling the CPA, accusing Linda of being a bad nanny, and getting them and their brothers taken away and separated from each other. Tim, on the other hand, calls Jane out for constantly getting him in trouble with their parents by leaving him to take the blame for her mischief and getting him thrown into their home's coal bin. Tim's point (the first time he's verbalized it to her) is enough to convince Jane to forgive him. I used to love Lois Lowry so much, until I heard her speak at the Brookline Children’s Book Store. She was…unpleasant, to put it mildly.Orphan's Ordeal: The Willoughbys think this is preferable to their current situation (living with abusive parents) until it actually happens and they're separated in the foster system to neglectful homes. The Nanny is revealed to also be an orphan, and has painful memories of the same system after being rejected from home after home.

No OSHA Compliance: Colonel Melanoff is the only worker in his factory, which is a good thing because its automated production line has no safety railings and shut off switches are in the middle of wall sized control panels. The Nanny Lampshades this, remarking that it's not a good place to raise Ruth both because she can't eat candy for the rest of her life and it's not baby-proofed. Bart, who read the book aloud to me, fell in love with the book early when a baby is left on the Willoughbys’ doorstep (as, of course, often happens in children’s literature) and the Willoughbys take her to someone else’s house and deposit her on that doorstep, since they think she is not worth bothering about. They leave a little note on the basket noting that, if there is a reward, it should go to the Willoughbys. Then, the oldest brother leaves a little P.S. noting that the baby’s name is “Ruth.” When his siblings ask why, he replies that it’s because “we are the Ruth-less Willoughbys.” Come on – you can’t help but laugh at least a little. The epilogue has a close-up on a face, with yarn strands as the beginning of a Willoughby mustache like Tim's always wanted.... only to reveal it's Jane's mustache, and Tim is now the only Willoughby without one. Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby survived the dirigible crash, floating at sea, and are devoured by a shark.
