A notch or two further up on the Samsung spectrum is the UE43RU7470, our 2019 Award-winning TV in the 40-43in size category, but there are a few treats that have been stripped off so that the RU7020 can hit a lower price.

It has virtually the same spec as the TU7100, and comes armed with the brand’s 4K upscaling prowess, HDR support and a bevy of streaming apps via the Tizen OS.

Superb Picture Quality

With AirPlay 2 built in, you can stream or share content from Apple devices to the big screen. Effortlessly play videos, music, photos and more from your iPhone, iPad and Mac on your Samsung TV. Audio is delivered via the set’s 2x 10W speakers. eARC support means it can pass through lossless audio, such as Dolby Atmos, to a compatible soundbar or system. The TV is supported by feet at either end, but at this size it shouldn’t pose a problem for placement on stands and tables. The feet offer sufficient clearance to slip a soundbar beneath if you have one or are considering getting one. The RU7020’s 3840 x 2160 resolution is governed by Samsung’s UHD processor and, in general, it does a pretty decent job of employing all those pixels when the source material is of a lower resolution. The Game mode doesn’t support VRR, ALLM or 4K@120Hz, but activating it unleashes a class-leading 9.7ms of input lag. Just be sure to put Game mode on “Auto” so the TV automatically detects a connected games console or PC. Picture quality It’s not a good look, and it spoils the rest of the experience just a little. Which is a great pity, because no one wants to choose between saving the planet or spoiling their viewing experience. in terms of detail fidelity and motion stability the 7020 looks a fair bit more expensive than it actually is – unless you’ve deployed ‘Eco’ mode. It makes one rather cynical about what the option is doing there in the first place. The remote control, it turns out, isn’t the only way the Samsung gives away its position in the model hierarchy. It’s fitted with two full-range drivers, each in receipt of ten watts of power - but while there’s no doubting the clarity of the the 7020’s audio delivery, in most meaningful ways it’s impoverished. Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output Experience better shadow detail and more accurate colour with Samsung's UHD Dimming technology which independently adjusts tone, brightness and sharpness.

None of this is a surprise, given the price of the TV, but you should be aware of the sort of sound you can expect. The facial features of our protagonists don’t have quite the same nuanced lighting, and they appear a little flatter and less 3D on the RU7020 as a result. It’s not a bad performance for a TV at this price, but it indicates what you get at the next step up. The RU7020 enjoys the same Tizen-based OS as Samsung TVs costing ten times as much and, as a consequence, it’s streets ahead of the majority of entry-level 4K sets it’s competing against. Percentage Luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output See all the details you've been missing on a crisp, clear Ultra HD picture - 4 times the resolution of Full HD.

Of course you’re not. What you want is a realistically-sized, realistically-priced TV with an up-to-date but real-world specification. And ideally you want it from a brand with a proper reputation (and, perhaps, from a brand with a huge, expensive and impractical TV or two in its line-up. Just for a bit of reflected glory, you understand). The overall palette of 1917 is subdued, and the TU7100 responds accordingly, avoiding boosting certain shades the way that other sets sometimes do. We’ve seen the French fields rendered in a rather lurid green that’s at odds with the film’s overall tone, but that’s not the case here. Samsung TVs work with Alexa, making it easy to integrate with your Alexa-enabled devices. Ask Alexa to turn on your TV, change channels, and more. Samsung is practically alone in making its core performance and feature set available at extremely low prices, as is typified by the new UE43TU7100, which is more or less the cheapest 4K model that the company currently makes. Design At least Samsung hasn’t tried to disguise any of the plastics that comprise the bezel, the rear and the feet of the RU7020. The rear panel, with its cutaways for inputs and mains power lead, is pleasantly (if rather pointlessly) textured, while the smooth plastic bezel surrounding the screen is surprisingly (and happily) brief.
