Description

This book takes situations all of us will experience during our lives and presents tactical lessons drawn from SAS training and battlefield experience. Its four authors - stars of the hit Channel 4 show Who Dares Wins - how their finely honed understanding of how to handle extreme challenges can be applied in any environment. Their advice on negotiation, people management, self-motivation and resilience, among other things, can transform your performance in a whole range of from buying a house, nailing a job interview, and the experience of dealing with rejection, to maintaining a diet, or managing that pushy colleague at work. Immaculately well-researched, breathtakingly broad and beautifully written ... a history of the everyday as well as of the great affairs of state ... This book evokes with astonishing accuracy what it was like to be alive at the time ... Sandbrook has maintained the uniformly high standard of this important series, and leaves the reader impatient for the next volume." Simon Heffer, Daily Telegraph Who Dares Wins captures the period with clairvoyant vividness. Compulsively readable, the book will be indispensable to anyone who wants to understand these pivotal years.' - John Gray, New Statesman Former SAS man Ryan knows every inch of his former regiment and uses the knowledge to excellent effect - you're left feeling you know what it's like to wear the famous winged dagger cap badge' -- Daily Mail

Who Dares Wins - Penguin Books UK

The transformation of Britain under these social developments seems driven more by structural change than a direct result of the election of Margaret Thatcher. Sandbrook notes that many changes superficially attributed to the Thatcher years were in fact well underway when Thatcher was first elected in 1979. This is certainly true of the Thatcher economic agenda. The tail end of the book is consumed largely by the Falklands conflict, Sandbrook deflating the usual narrative of a jingoist prime minister fighting a war that nobody bar the Sun supported and showing how not only was the idea of ceding sovereignty of the islands in the air before the war, it was actually the resistance of the Argentine government which prevented it from happening. The broader story, however, reveals a conflict brewing between rival media providers and the fractures within the Labour Party, foreshadowing issues that have become relevant again only recently. Middleton, Anthony; Fox, Jason; Ollerton, Matthew; Maclachlan, Colin (15 February 2016). Leadership Secrets from the Special Forces: SAS: Who Dares Wins. Headline. ISBN 9781472240729– via Google Books. Realizing that I needed an authoritative overview of the early Thatcher era and the effect on British morale brought on by the Falklands war, with the 40th anniversary approaching. This book is an interesting read. Peppered with personal military experience, this book is narrated by Ant, Ollie, Foxy and Colin most well known for Channel 4's SAS: Who Dares Wins television series. It offers some useful insights into how 'Elite' techniques can be utilised on Civvy Street: how to successfully self-motivate or how to deal with stress/emotion during job interviews for example. Postwar Britain suffered a long period of decline as they recovered from that tremendous struggle. This period is really the beginning of the turn around. I remember those years well, but this book does a great job of covering it from a British perspective. I don’t think the author is a “Thatcherite” but he covers her fairly.

Who Dares Wins by Dominic Sandbrook | Waterstones

Mrs Thatcher is one of the most divisive figures in British political history, but one who is now generally the subject of rampant vituperation. Having just turned sixteen, I was too young to vote in the 1979 election, but contrary to the revisionist view prevalent today, I remember the feeling almost of euphoria when Mrs Thatcher emerged victorious from that election. This was, it is true, more a feeling that change … any change … had to be welcome. Things had been so relentlessly grim over the preceding seven or eight months that any sort of new start was welcome. Of course, no-one would have believed in May 1979 that the Conservatives would remain in power for the next eighteen years, and, as if to prove Santayana’s adage about the cyclical nature of history, there was the same sense of euphoria or relief when Tony Blair’s New Labour finally ousted them. Softcover. Condition: Very good. VG softcover. First edition, first printing. Light signs of wear to exterior, binding solid and straight, interior clean and unmarked. Lightly read, but a very nice example. first edition ("First published in the United Kingdom in 2009", first printing (complete number line). The period of transition was notable also for major disruptive reactions driven by the decimation of the traditional working class by industrial transformation. These changes were ephemeral rather than durable, albeit highly significant for many at the time. They included substantial protest marches by the newly unemployed, increasing racial tensions and riots in the inner cities, the reinvigoration of the CND anti nuclear campaigns, and Northern Ireland hunger strikes and related terrorist bombings. You don’t have to have grown up with the Mini Metro, Lymeswold cheese and the Sinclair Spectrum v BBC Micro to adore this brilliant history of the Eighties. It slides compellingly from socialism to Soft Cell’s Tainted Love and made me want to be 10 again, bewildered by the Falklands War on TV." Julian Glover, Books of the Year, London Evening Standard
