Description

Today, we take forensics for granted in determining the outcomes of crimes......but, of course it wasn't always that way. This book traces the life of Dr. Edward Heinrich, America's first forensic scientist and his revolutionary work, beginning in the early 1930s. Prior to his ground-breaking study of bloodstains, blood patterns, fingerprints, and criminal profiling, police were limited to evidence based on footprints and eye witness testimony. Heinrich was looked upon as a bit of a crank and questions were asked if guilt or innocence could be determined by scientific measurement until he began getting results based on his approach. Laurie R. King recreated Holmes in her Mary Russell series (beginning with 1994's The Beekeeper's Apprentice), set during the First World War and the 1920s. Her Holmes, semi-retired in Sussex, meets a teenaged American girl. Recognising a kindred spirit, he trains her as his apprentice and subsequently marries her. As of 2021, the series includes seventeen base novels and additional writings. [222] In the 2011 BAFTA awards, the show as a whole won the award for Best Drama Series, while Freeman (as Dr Watson) won the award for the Best Supporting Actor. Cumberbatch was nominated for Best Actor. Andrew Scott won 2012's Best Supporting Actor, beating Freeman, for his work in the second series, which was nominated in other categories. Guy Mankowski has said of Holmes that his ability to change his appearance to blend into any situation "helped him personify the idea of the English eccentric chameleon, in a way that prefigured the likes of David Bowie." The cinematography and editing was excellent (a feature that was much improved in the recent series of Doctor Who), the display of text messages stylish and deceptively simple. Holmes and Watson often carry pistols with them to confront criminals—in Watson's case, his old service weapon (probably a Mark III Adams revolver, issued to British troops during the 1870s). [139] Holmes and Watson shoot the eponymous hound in The Hound of the Baskervilles, [140] and in "The Adventure of the Empty House", Watson pistol-whips Colonel Sebastian Moran. [141] In " The Problem of Thor Bridge", Holmes uses Watson's revolver to solve the case through an experiment. Heinrich developed many revolutionary methods for solving crimes including fingerprints, blood spatter, and comparative microscope (invented by someone else, but he was among the first to use it). He was also credited with techniques that are now considered junk science, like handwriting analysis. The archaic methods of crime fighting in the 1920s, procedures depending on hunches and weak circumstantial evidence, were futile. The book focuses on eight of Heinrich’s more famous cases, not all of them successful, demonstrating his use of deduction and development of forensic science methods. Although, I felt the book could have been less choppy and more cohesively written, it’s a fascinating look at the evolving use of forensic science and criminology in some interesting cases, as well as the American justice system at the time and the difficulty of getting juries to accept and trust new types of evidence.
