In my son’s newborn months, we often wore him facing inward, for naps. He would only sleep for 20 to 30 minutes in his bassinet, but we could count on a two-hour nap in the Gemini. We lived downtown at the time, and facing him outward was perfect taking the dog out or walking to the store. Last, Beco could be more transparent about all of the materials that go into making the Gemini carrier. They list “cotton” but the carriers have other components that clearly aren’t cotton. I’d like a full accounting of materials.

The one feature our testers really didn’t like about the Beco was the snaps for adjusting seat width. Some brands use buttons, and LÍLLÉbaby puts snaps on the outside of the belt, but on the Beco you’ve got two open female snap rings on the inside of the belt, just ready to dig into your skin. It’s not a fatal flaw, but some kind of fold-over cover for the snaps (along with a lumbar support pad) would make the Beco more competitive. The bottom line If you’re a plus-size parent looking for a neat, long-lasting carrier that you can use from birth, I recommend the Tula Explore. It offers all the carrying positions and will last from the earliest newborn days until 18 months. If the buttons and storage pouch were a bit easier to work with this would be have landed in first place. As it is, the Ergobaby is a great carrier that only really outshines the competition when you’re transforming it from one mode to another, which isn’t something you’ll do every day. This carrier takes a close second place, but the LÍLLÉbaby was a slightly better carrier overall and is less expensive. Try putting on the carrier at home, with baby (and parent ideally) fed and rested. If baby starts getting fussy, take a short walk around the house and a few breaths, and continue when you're both ready.

Should You Consider the Beco Gemini?

Compared to some other models we tested, the Beco has the least amount of padding in the shoulder straps and waist belt. Both of those sort of dig into your flesh, especially if you wear it for longer periods of time.

The organic cotton Coracor Baby Wrap tops my list thanks to its quality and stunning Scandi designs, closely followed by the bamboo Izmi Baby Wrap, which feels almost silky and cool to the touch, and is naturally breathable and hypoallergenic. If you’re hoping to breastfeed in your baby carrier, a design with inner straps like the Infantino is definitely not going to help. It’s not as restrictive as some of the new BabyBjorn designs with a full mesh panel, but it’s still going to get in the way. Beco advertises the Gemini carrier as accommodating little ones from their newborn days to toddlerhood. The carrier supports kids from 7 to 35 pounds. We used it for our son until about 12 months, and it’s been perfect for our daughter, who is still an infant.BabyBjorn Carrier We: Similar to the BabyBjorn Carrier One, but without a front-carry option and slightly uglier. Our test team for this review consisted of our resident babywearing dad and six volunteer moms. We also reached out to some friends who are experienced baby-wearers for research and to participate in our photo shoot. If you prefer to feed with your baby in a more horizontal position, you might want to use a ring sling or stretchy wrap. If you’re a more petite mum carrying a large child, opt for a Lenny Lamb or a Tula. If you’ve ever found some baby carriers hard to do up by yourself, these two are good options for you as there are a number of different ways to configure the shoulder straps.
