Description

Sentence builders can support language development across the curriculum and provide and model a sentence frame on the whiteboard or a wall. Encourage learners to use the frame for speaking and in writing: e.g. to make predictions, offer cause effect statements, describe a process etc. Simple sentences are pretty simple: just a single independent clause, no more, no less. This includes subject and verbs, but can also include objects.

We do also have several other sentence building activities which can be found here: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resources/english-as-an-additional-language-eal/eal-speaking-and-listening/eal-speaking-and-listening-sentence-building The exception to this rule is imperative sentences (commands), which only need a verb. We can assume the subject is the person the speaker is talking to.Sentences and sentence building are one of the most important skills in English. It is the move away from decoding words with phonics or the recognition of sounds and shows a move to actual communication. Some of the best ways to teach how to construct sentences are with games and activities. We highlight the best Free games to play online and in classrooms. Try out these magical techniques for taking ordinary sentences and making them much more marvellous.

If every sentence were as simple as subject + verb + object, books would be so boring! That’s why English has developed a few different sentence structures to keep things interesting and give us more options for speaking and writing. Common subordinating conjunctions include because , since , although , unless , and while , as well as relative pronouns like that , which , whatever , whenever , whoever , etc. How Do You Change A Sentence Into An Interrogative Sentence? The MEGA bundle. A must for all English teachers Sentence builders are made for both fiction and non-fiction texts and can be a springboard for teachers to create their own. The sentence builders specifically aim to reduce the pressure on children to be able to create and construct their ideas into a written form without the worry of whether they can spell and/or recall any of the key words. In this example, lends is the verb and my buddy is the subject because they’re the one lending. The word calculator is what’s called a direct object , the noun that receives the action. In this case, the direct object is the thing being lent—a calculator. Compound sentences: Acompound sentence joins two main clauses and a connective. The clauses are linked by connectives. For example, 'Sarah liked football but preferred rugby.' It can be achieved through practice both in writing and reading sentences, and the best way to do that is with simple short sentences of three or four words to let students become familiar with sentence structure. Activities based on vocab chunks + SB sentences. (Paragaph activities also available for some languages.) The first sentence builder answers the simple question 'Où habites-tu?' and the second describes the home. The third and fourth sentence builders describe the town and free-time activities.

Although subordinate clauses have both subjects and verbs, they cannot exist on their own. They contain special words called subordinating conjunctions , which connect them to independent clauses. The poster and worksheet set encourage children to illustrate their own short story board and write single sentence captions beneath them. Challenge your class to use lots of adjectives and make their sentences as illustrative as their drawings! How can I introduce sentence building at KS2? If you’d like to see more Twinkl resources to help you build a lesson plan on this topic, then you might want to try a few of the following: Sentence games successfully introduce both the initial concepts of sentence construction to young learners and extending that learning with more complex structures with older learners. Games like, Sentence Scramble, Sentence Bridge Builder and Trapped Sentences all help to cement sentence structures. You also can add question words to the interrogative questions. In that case, you place the question at the beginning of the sentence and then follow with the typical interrogative structure:

Language is full of fun little quirks like this, and if you’d like to help your class or child get a handle on them, then you’ve come to the right place. This worksheet would be a great way to give kids some practice at converting a tepid turn of phrase into a tremendous sentence.
