A year ago Felicity Lloyd fled England to south Georgia, one of the most remote islands in the world, escaping her past and the man she once loved. Can she keep running her whole life? This was a slow paced but gripping family drama. I really liked Esther and it was good to read a story based around a woman in middle age when her marriage falls apart, her children leave home and we follow her as she's trying to build a new life for herself. If you haven't read any books by this author, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? You really don't know what you are missing! She is my all time favorite author. All of her books have been WINNERS for me. This one is a memorable read. Tense, gripping, and with a twist you won’t see coming, The Split by Sharon Bolton is an explosive new standalone thriller about a troubled woman on the run to a remote glacial location on the Antarctic island of South Georgia.

However, I also felt that in this book it was shown that despite a marriage that didn’t work, the differences between two people, when it truly matters, all those differences aren’t of importance.
Because there was a time that these two people loved each other, resulting in two children. And no matter what, the children always have the highest priority, even if that means facing a past you would rather forget. The true strength of the book for me was the slow build/honest view of the new lives they’re building and the supporting characters. One of the strongest things in this book, in my very subjective opinion, was how flawed everyone is. Every character feels real in a way that made me want to instantly befriend them all (and also shake some sense into most of them, except for Sophie and Charlie, who are perfect and I would die for them.) Ally makes some abysmal decisions, and, as the book goes on, it becomes clear that her ex is not, in fact, an evil tyrant who dumped Ally for no reason. We learn this along with Ally, and it felt very authentic to see the truth of the situation come into view at the same time she does. I'm always a fan of books where the protagonist is allowed to be messy and to make mistakes, and to do deeply questionable things; I don't believe a character should be forced to be likeable at all times. Real people aren't. Ally was still a deeply sympathetic character, even when she was being a real idiot, and that's the mark of great writing; I never stopped rooting for her. The Split starts as a classic chase thriller, with Freddie pursuing Felicity across the frozen wastes of this Antarctic island. She knows South Georgia well, and has had time to plan her escape, but she hasn’t allowed for his determination and stubbornness being as great as her own. In one of the most dangerous environments on earth, Freddie and Felicity finally come face to face – and the outcome is one no one could have expected. #TheSplit The main highlight of the novel was the amazing friendship between Jeremy and Ally. I loved what a hilarious pair they are, bringing out the good in each other. Overall, a charming comedy with a flawed protagonist at its core, peppered with hilarious yet satisfying moments as we see Ally navigate her heartache and out the other side. 4 stars. The character of Kevin had been in one of the early drafts of Shyamalan's Unbreakable, but he had pulled the character out, stating there were balancing issues at that time. With Split, he brought in some of the scenes he had written for Unbreakable around Kevin. [8] The film ends with the appearance of Bruce Willis's character, David Dunn, from Unbreakable, who makes a comment in reference to the previous film, placing Unbreakable and Split within the same narrative universe. Shyamalan requested permission to incorporate the character from Walt Disney Studios, which had produced Unbreakable. [9] Shyamalan met with Sean Bailey about the use of the character; they came to a gentlemen's agreement where Bailey agreed to allow the use of the character in the film without a fee and Shyamalan promised that Disney would be involved in a sequel if developed. [9] Shyamalan was very secretive of Willis' involvement in Split, removing the final scene from the film for test audiences. The cameo was shown at the 2016 Fantastic Fest and 2016 AFI Fest months before its theatrical release. [8] There is so much about this book that is just right. The characters feel like real people, the pace feels gentle and unhurried but the story keeps moving, things end well but in a way that doesn’t feel contrived or implausible. It is a coming-of-age book that centers around the coming of age in your 30's when you realize the choices you made in your early 20's may not be something you are passionate about anymore. The story was unique in that the character finding their place was not centered around a sweeping romance. It was a breakup book. N'Duka, Amanda (July 24, 2017). "Sarah Paulson joins M. I fell in love with writing aged 11 when my class was asked to write a ghost story - that thrill of being able to make it all up! Studying English at Oxford was a dream come true, but then real life got in the way and I started a career in advertising, climbing the greasy pole for four years, helping sell washing powder and cold remedies. Wonderful review Christine. I also loved this one and the twists were fantastic. A great thriller for sure. We first meet Felicity, a well known glaciologist who is currently stationed in South Georgia. The story is divided into parts, South Georgia Present Day is Part One. She is worried about the last tourist boat that is arriving. There is someone in her life that she is very afraid of and she worries that he will find her here, even so far from the mainland. If her worst fears are confirmed she has a plan. .. Atmospheric and beautifully written. A deadly game of cat and mouse at the edge of the world.” Erin Kelly

So, The Split was a welcome surprise. A book I had been anticipating, a sapphic adult contemporary, that I really enjoyed. It’s a story of rekindling friendships, of rediscovering who you are without someone. It’s a story of messy lesbians. A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. Malcolm is perhaps the greatest cat in literature of all time, and I don't say that lightly, as someone who has read an actually quite embarrassing amount of books just because they mention a cat in the blurb. You can tell this book was written by a cat owner, and I mean that as a the highest compliment. This book has been marketed as something of an adult version of the Georgia Nicholson series by the late and great Louise Rennison, and although I don't think it has quite the same feral, manic energy as that series does, it does share the tendency to make you laugh like a lunatic, and also a fantastic cat. I'm a huge Sharon Bolton fan, and this is her best yet ... as always, great story, wonderful characters, all floating on a breathless buzz, somewhere between dread and fright." — Lee ChildWeintraub, Steve (January 17, 2017). Shyamalan expressed hope for a third installment following Split, saying, "I hope [a third Unbreakable film happens]. The answer is yes. I'm just such a wimp sometimes. I don't know what's going to happen when I go off in my room, a week after this film opens, to write the script. But I'm going to start writing. [I have] a really robust outline, which is pretty intricate. But now the standards for my outlines are higher. I need to know I've won already. I'm almost there but I'm not quite there." [51] He explained that the final scene from Split was David's realization that Mr. Glass from the first film was right; there are superpowered people in the world. [52] Disney, which produced Unbreakable through its Touchstone Pictures division, was expected to be a production partner and have financial participation with Universal for the sequel. [9] Please keep in mind that it is near impossible to NOT spoil this book. So, you are going to get a lot of anecdotal notes on what it is like to read The Split in hopes that it will convey the urgency in which, YOU, should read it. I will go through some vague points of strengths without spoiling anything as much as possible. However, understand I’m doing the best I can here without giving ANYTHING away because that would be a sin against the literary world that I refuse to commit . I don’t deal in spoilers without fair warning, either way. However, this is particularly difficult. So, this review is gonna veer on the odd side, even for me. And that is saying a whole load of things. Amanda Brookfield writes first class contemporary novels that are in a class of their own and The Split is a superbly written tale readers are going to love.
