Ice Magic: As a member of the Whitethorn House, Rowan can control and manipulate ice. This is seen in Heir of Fire, where he freezes an entire lake during a training exercise.

Celaena is chilling in Varese, in Wendlyn, and is doing nothing but brawling and lying in the sun. She has no plans of killing the royal family – they are, after all, Ashryvers, and also their Crown Prince, Galan, is too good and peaceful. Instead, she decides to ask her Fae Queen aunt, Maeve (sister of her great-grandmother, Mab, and Mora) about the Wyrdkeys. Then she meets Rowan Whitethorn, a Prince from Mora’s line, who takes her to travel south to Maeve’s lands. Manon, Sorrel, Asterin, Vesta, Fallon, and Faline rescue Elide. The Thirteen barely escape the explosion caused by Kaltain that destroys one-third of Morath, which includes the destruction of the evidence of the Thirteen’s actions. The Thirteen drop Elide off in the Oakwald Forest and send her on way before returning to Morath. The Thirteen decide to stay at Morath until the Matron arrives and then they will decide what to do. Celaena finds out the three dark creatures are actually the Valg princes, the ones who forged the three Wyrdkeys out of the Wyrdgate all those ages ago. They are surprised to see that Celaena has Goldryn, the ruby sword from the mountain cave, which belonged to Athril (Maeve’s ex-lover) and Brannon Galathynius. Celaena keeps fighting them but they nearly overpower her (and cut off her hair in the process hdu). Then, Rowan’s “friends” arrive, the five other warriors working for Maeve, but none of them help her as they race inside to help Rowan, except for Gavriel, who she saw once before. They take over from Rowan to kill all the soldiers, but then as Rowan goes outside, Celaena is swallowed by the darkness. His friends keep him from going to her because he would also go insane. The Valg love Celaena’s misery and keep her alive, going through her horrible memories over and over again. If she had to be here thanks to Chaol’s misplaced good intentions, then at least she’d receive the answers she needed. There was one person in Erilea who had been present when the Wyrdkeys were wielded by a conquering demon race that had warped them into three tools of such mighty power that they’d been hidden for thousands of years and nearly wiped from memory. Queen Maeve of the Fae. Maeve knew everything—as was expected when you were older than dirt.Celaena and Rowan are still traveling south. In the forest, Celaena spots the Little Folk, all kinds of fairies. They’re not allowed to light a fire because the forest is full of dangerous things. Chaol meets with his father, who tells him he has two months before he has to come to Anielle. Dorian has been sparring and gets another injury. He meets Sorscha and asks her about where she came from (a small town in Fenharrow, her parents were murdered). He’s very intrigued. It had been ten days since she’d arrived in Varese itself, after hauling ass from the coast. Not because she was particularly eager to kill her targets, but because the city was so damn large that it seemed her best chance of dodging the immigration officials, whom she’d given the slip instead of registering with their oh-so-benevolent work program. Hurrying to the capital had also provided welcome activity after weeks at sea, where she hadn’t really felt like doing anything other than lying on the narrow bed in her cramped cabin or sharpening her weapons with a near-religious zeal. Rowan is first seen looking for Aelin. He is seen with his companions interrogating Fae guards and torturing them for information. His cold-blooded warrior personality is dominant during his search for Aelin. When he finds Aelin, he immediately softens. He wants to help Aelin, but she doesn't let him. Slowly, he sees Aelin wanting to be close to him again. They have a talk about their relationship after Aelin finds two wedding rings for them to wear. The conversation ends in them having sex and giving new claiming marks to each other - due to Aelin's being removed.

The lessons with Rowan are impossibly hard, and he is harsh and brutal with Celaena. He continually asks her to shift into her Fae form and then to summon her fire magic. She works hard trying to call her abilities in any way he requests, but at first it’s to no avail. Groaning, Celaena rolled onto her belly and surveyed the street forty feet below. She knew the guards patrolling it by now—had marked their faces and weapons, just as she had with the guards atop the high castle walls. She’d memorized their rotations, and how they opened the three massive gates that led into the castle. It seemed that the Ashryvers and their ancestors took safety very, very seriously. Dorian goes to see Sorscha again, and she admits she knows all about their adventures but won’t tell anyone. Dorian gets scared and his magic erupts, and Sorscha takes the blame for ruining all her potions. She also promises she will help him control it. Celaena swigged from the jug of wine—or tried to. It was empty, which she supposed was a blessing, because gods her head was spinning. She needed water, and more teggya. And perhaps something for the gloriously painful split lip and scraped cheekbone she’d earned last night in one of the city’s tabernas. The witch clans get together and it’s a mess, because they all hate each other. They hold a memorial service for Baba Yellowlegs (remember? The witch Celaena killed in Crown of Midnight), who was the Matron of the Yellowlegs clan (they are the worst). The witches go from Omega mountain to the Northern Fang, the two mountains on each side of the Ferien Gap, where there are wyverns waiting.

About Sarah J. Maas

Rowan is devoted by a blood oath to Aelin and will defend her at any cost. He is incredibly loyal and supportive of her choices. Celaena goes off to work in the kitchens, and she meets Emrys and Luca, the old cook and his help. She calls herself Elentiya (sobs). She then finds out how the Fae look down on demi Fae and how the latter are not allowed to enter Doranelle, ever. Shape-shifting: Rowan has an animal form as well, which is a white-tailed hawk. Even in this form, he can still control and use his magic.
