Description

This includes birds such as the Blackbird, Song Thrush and Robin (see our 'What birds eat this' section for more information on this). Our Sunflower Hearts are a fantastic food for all year round feeding in either; a seed feeder, a sunflower feeder, a ground feeder or on a bird table. They're packed full of all of the nutrients required and because they have their shells removed leaving just the tasty hearts inside, birds expend less energy eating them. We'd recommend supplementing your sunflower hearts during winter with suet products and during the spring months, consider offering a smaller seed such as sunflower chips, which are great for fledglings due to their smaller size. Whilst they are slightly more expensive, you are not wasting money on husks which cannot be eaten, giving you better value overall.

Larger species of bird such as jackdaw and also unwanted grey squirrels will generally be attracted to the easy meal which sunflower hearts represent. Woodpeckers are larger than the majority of songbirds, so place sunflower hearts on a bird table or ground feeder. Striped has a harder outer husk than black, which is one of the reasons why black is more popular as it’s easier for birds to remove the husk. This refund is subject to standard bank clearing times and depending on the payment method can take up to 10 working days.

Great spotted woodpecker are known to eat sunflower seeds, and will often cling precariously onto hanging tube feeders to get to sunflower hearts. They are a great energy and protein source, which makes sunflower hearts ideal for all seasons and stages of bird life. With Sunflower hearts being husk-free, not only do birds use less energy to consume but there is much less waste left behind in your garden. Premium Sunflower Hearts for wild garden birds are also known as Premium Sunflower Kernels and Premium Sunflower Seeds. Hearts have many benefits, including that they help birds to preserve their energy, which is especially important during the Winter.Finch species such as goldfinch will sit on a perch to eat the sunflower hearts, whereas tit species such as great tit will fly off with a single heart, find a suitable natural perch like a twig, hold the heart with its feet, then chip away and consume small chunks.

At Vine House Farm Our sunflower hearts come in five different pack sizes, with four weights available for sunflower heart chips. Sunflower hearts refers to the heart of the sunflower seed, which you can get to by removing the hard outer shell (the husk). Being huskless means less mess and greatly reduced waste, as these seeds are eaten by all species of birds, and for those that last long enough to fall, Hedgehogs love them!If you’re worried about making a mess in your garden, these sunflower hearts are de-husked so they are a perfect choice. A ground tray or bird table , such as this copper roof bird table , allows species such as blackbird, dunnock and collared dove (none of which will use the hanging feeder – though blackbirds do sometimes try) to easily feed.

Using a hanging feeder with round perches will also allow chaffinches and even ground feeding birds like robins to also get to the food (robins swallow the sunflower hearts whole). Using husk-free hearts rather than seeds means birds do not have to expend as much energy removing the outer layer. This means that they are easier for bird to consume and also have the benefit of leaving very little waste in the form of husks, on your lawn or patio. If you’re asking ‘what birds do sunflower hearts attract’, you can find more detailed information see the ‘which birds eat sunflower hearts’ section below. All of our sunflower hearts are suitable for feeding all year round, although you may wish to switch to sunflower chips (or supplement with chips) in the spring months to help fledglings who may not be able to get at the seed quite as easily as adult birds. When they do this they discard the shell in your garden, creating quite a bit of mess around your feeders. Similarly you might want to supplement with suet pellets or fat balls during the winter months, as the suet will help build fat reserves.
