Just as COVID struck, it was announced that a television adaptation of the series was to be produced by London-based production company Stolen Pictures. By the time she meets Tracker, the “Red Wolf” of the previous book, and becomes part of the quest to find a mysterious lost boy, she has outlived everyone who ever knew her. The case itself is another interesting one that sees Grant and others in the Specialist Unit visit parts of London and beyond.

Strange symbols were left on his wall, as was also the case in Althea’s apartment, and the child of one of his neighbors says she saw alien that day. His plotting is still satisfyingly inventive and the continuing characters maintain their charm in the ninth novel of a series that began in 2011. Examples include novels by Ilona Andrews, Mary Balogh, Aster Glenn Gray, Helen Hoang, Piper Huguley, Lisa Kleypas, Jeannie Lin, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Naomi Novik, Nalini Singh, and Megan Whalen Turner. You need to have read the rest of the books to understand this one, but if you haven't got this series, get it.She escapes from them as she later escapes the roles men try to assign her: whore, slave, wife, victim. Ximinez [with a cruel leer]: Now -- you will stay in the Comfy Chair until lunch time, with only a cup of coffee at eleven. Aaronovitch has no peers when it comes to successfully combining the appeal of a down-to-earth police procedural with all-out fantasy: here are real places, real history and real problems complicated by the existence of magic, ancient spirits, fairies, ghosts and talking foxes, all dwelling alongside ordinary, clueless humans. It was different to see Peter training someone, instead of being the newbie himself, and it highlights his growth and maturation.

Speaking of side characters, I would have liked a bit more of Nightingale and his relationship with Peter, too (I really liked what I did see of it, though). An autopsy reveals that whatever blasted the cavernous hole in David Moore’s chest also shot a metal cylinder into his body, and the cylinder had the magical signature known as vestigia, which is made up of faint sensory impressions. I am also concerned that Beverly is turning into a supportive romantic partner to Peter rather than a budding power in her own right, as she was earlier in the series.Aaronovitch has also announced several works within the same fictional universe, but set outside the chronology of the main series. Molly; The Folly's domestic helper, of not entirely clarified species, but she has been referred to as fae-like in the PC Grant novel " Foxglove Summer". Now Peter and his fellow investigators have to find the other people who owned these rings before the Angel of Death, as Peter nicknames her, does. I felt the last outing from Ben Aaronovitch was weaker than all of the previous Rivers of London books. Still, Sahra and Peter learn that Jocasta and the others were students at Manchester University in the 1990s and they made a small religious group.

Black Mould – Sahra Guleed joins Grant in determining the source of Black Mould invading the suburbs while Nightingale takes on a haunted ice cream van. I loved this book in this series just as much as I love the first book, except now I will need to wait until Ben ( and Kobna) get finished with the next book. In the latest Rivers of London book, DC Peter Grant is anticipating becoming the father of twins, as his beloved Beverley turns the back garden into an enormous birthing pool – but meanwhile he must solve a mysterious, possibly magical, murder in the London Silver Vaults. The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light, and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit. Effortlessly original, endlessly inventive and hugely entertaining—step into the world of the much-loved, bestselling Rivers of London series.

The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash and loss of memory amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit. Leaving London, Peter goes to a small village in Herefordshire, where there appears to be a supernatural element to the disappearance of two local girls. Ben’s best (and only) friend Patton insists on going along for protection, and the two of them wind up as prisoners on an alien spaceship. I love Guleed and while I wanted more of her, she still played an important role and her conversations with Peter were interesting (she’s like a better version of Leslie, except one of the good guys). Water Weed – When Chelsea and Olympia decide to earn a few quid on the side, Peter and Bev find themselves confronting London's new queenpin of crime – the brutal and beautiful Hoodette!

At Dragonmeet convention in London, on 30 November 2019, it was announced that a role-playing game based on the book series would be published by Chaosium.Overall, this wasn’t the strongest entry in the Rivers of London series (mainly because of the pacing issues, for me), but it was still good. Peter’s maturation arc means that he doesn’t need to depend on Nightingale as much as he used to, but Nightingale is a great character and I would love more of him.
