Thanks to its clever design, it’s as handy for sitting in a joint of meat as it cooks in the oven, as it is for jam-making, barbecuing, grilling and even deep frying.

The device itself doesn't have a screen, but is controlled and monitored entirely through an app on your smartphone. Some simply tell you the temperature, while others show requirements for different meats so you can see at a glance if your turkey, for instance, is cooked.As anyone who’s tried a dry steak or pink chicken breast can attest, a few degrees can make all the difference.

We were particularly impressed with the results of our roast beef, as it saved us from overcooking it – we decided to trust it, rather than the instructions on the packaging. The base unit has a backlit LCD, and the display cycles between the two temperatures being monitored. The app allows remote monitoring of the temperatures using both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so there are no worries about getting out of range of the base.

If you wander outside the range, you’ll get a push notification so you won’t accidentally go too far from the grill or oven.
