Description

I relatively recently came across the Practical Engineer YouTube Channel, where he goes into a whole pile of various civil engineering and other infrastructure topics. But, until now, there has never been a field guide to help readers understand and appreciate the less-than-natural parts of our everyday environment. Being a fan of this type of stuff (and Grady's YouTube channel) I was familiar with a lot of what the booked covered, but still found interesting tidbits throughout. I went into this book with the expectations of a The Way Things Work type of book: lots of wonderfully drawn picture that do most of the explaining of a concept with a couple of paragraphs for context. They knew who was eating what, and what ate that, and where the water came from, and where the waste went, and so on.

This book offers an overview of utilities (electricity, water, comms), transportation (rail, roads) and some of the most vital structures (bridges, dams, coastal infrastructure), supplementing the text with good illustrations. Before producing videos full time, Hillhouse spent nearly ten years as an engineering consultant, working on a wide variety of infrastructure projects with a focus on dams and hydraulic structures.

With colorful, and mostly clear illustrations showing lots and lots of details about the way things -- dams, roadways, wind turbines, etc.

So their explanations blithely skip steps and fail to give me the whole picture they're trying to convey. Field guides are available to help readers identify and appreciate just about every part of the natural environment from plants and animals to rocks and minerals, without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail. In particular, the level of detail here is a tough double edged sword, because the fact that this book has no math and no equations I'm sure makes it great for totally fresh readers (or kids!Author covers a broad range of topics, but doesn't go in-depth on them, making the book seem more geared towards younger readers. When I got to an illustration I tried making the font larger but that only affected the text of the book and not the text contained in the illustration nor the illustration itself.
