Description

The gentle, rhyming text reminds readers that emotions are perfectly normal and that everyone feels angry, happy, alone, or jealous at one time or the other. This book works best with preschoolers because there aren’t a lot of words on the pages, and the message is straightforward. I love the intention of this SEL book — to help kids see that swallowing your feelings without expressing them just makes you feel yucky and that you can get help from your friends.

A child is standing alone, naming and ever-so briefly exploring 11 emotions felt, including bravery, sadness, anger, happiness, jealousy, and alone-ness. As Hattie Harmony goes through the school day, she shares different strategies to help her worried friends. This book is very interactive and colorful, so younger children will really enjoy looking at each page. Featuring charming animal illustrations and heartwarming rhymes about the loving moments mothers and sons share, Why a Son Needs a Momis the perfect story to connect mother and son together.Day after day he watches and waits, and waits and watches, until one day … his worst nightmare comes true!

But instead of going to bed like a normal person, my brain was so full of serotonin that I couldn't help but stayed awake and replay the story in my head for hours! The artwork that accompanies the text is beautiful and the image of a child at the centre of every page is very powerful. This would be perfect to use with younger children who often struggle to identify how they are feeling as well as older children who may feel like they are different because of their feelings. The beauty of this approach is in the respect the book has for the feeling, and the absence of a narrative that encourages the reader to “get over” it or indicates that it’s “bad,” both of which are anxiety-producing notions. He also has a sweet pre-teen daughter, Charlie, who is incredibly mature for her age, deaf, loves to dance, and enjoys attending Farley's comedy shows. Age gap (but make it so perfect to the point that MMC is a man, not a 35 year old boy who can’t even deal with his own shit. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a children’s classic, and for good reason. With Jackson in real life examples, your child will learn to develop their understanding of their own emotions. Over the years, he prioritized his daughter and their life together, but in the process, he became isolated until he met Farley.
