It’s also a challenging emulsion to use for portraiture and general people pictures as the emulsion tends to emphasize reds, which in certain situations can make people look Oompa Loompa-ish.

And in high contrast situations, it has amazing latitude to keep details in the highlights and the shadows. Place your subject in good light, or wait for them to come to an area that has the best light so that you can have a decent shutter speed to make a good image. It has fast become a favorite of the CP staff owing to its super-speed and surprisingly strong exposure latitude and tonality.I honestly haven’t had any issues with Kodak Gold 200, but I would suggest avoiding tungsten and florescent lighting situations unless you’re willing to use a filter, which will cause you to lose a stop or two of exposure. This shot here was taken using Kodak Gold in 120 format on my Hasselblad camera, and it shows just how versatile this film is. Interesting in my negative developing phone app Tmax 400 pushed to 800 is the same time as developed at box speed. I occasionally shoot Ektar 100, but other than trying out something new once in a while (just shot a couple of the new Ektachrome), or if i’m out and can’t get any pro films, that’s pretty much it for me. With other budget films, corners have been cut to produce a cheaper product, meaning that you end up with heavy grain.

And that can make me take forever to get images and end up with pent up expectations and underwhelming results.According to Kodak specs, Gold 200 can be overexposed three stops and underexposed two stops and still produce a decent image!

Often looked at as a worthy Portra alternative, Gold 200 reproduces warm, beautiful tones made for golden hour, portraits in warm lighting, and warm color palettes. If you’re looking to recreate the Kodak Gold look with your digital photos, check out our list of Kodak Gold presets. The former is more primitive and asks more of the user for a good outcome, but ever so much more elegant and subtle in execution and use than the latte. Just about every film photographer has used Portra 400 as some point, which makes it tough for Portra images to stand out from the crowd. This can be off-putting and annoying, especially if you don’t notice it until after you’ve had your images developed.

Kodak Gold is available in 120 film so you now have the option to shoot this amazingly popular emulsion in either (or both) 35mm or 120!

The latitude allows for anywhere from two stops of underexposure to three stops of overexposure, so you can have fun shooting without worrying too much about the exposure settings. Unlike digital where when you change your ISO, you actually change the sensitivity of the sensor; in film, when you change your ISO you only change the way your meter reads the light. Think of it as an enhancement agent to photos that contain a lot of color, but it doesn’t overdo it. ISO 200 speed film, which offers really fine grain and natural looking results under mixed daylight conditions. In some ways, Portra 800 is a bit redundant considering Portra 400’s exposure latitude covers nearly all of Portra 800’s effective range.
