Miele's tech made the Trifle HX2 Pro a dream to use when transitioning from carpets to hard floors, with the level of suction remaining consistent.

To help you decide, I’ve come up with some reasons why you should go with this German-made stick vacuum. Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ. We reviewed the Triflex HX2 Pro to find out if it's worth the money, and if that improved power makes light work of cleaning a three-bed family home. The narrow roller is a factor why it couldn’t resist long strands, plus it does not have any combs to untangle them. Excellent carpet cleaning performance: The Triflex HX1 is built to clean this surface well thanks to the wide nozzle and stiff bristles.

If you want great cleaning but don’t want to pay quite so much, the Dyson V10 is your best choice and, again, offers many more extras. Deep cleans well: One surprise doing the tests is how well this product cleans embedded sand in the middle setting. However, the small dust canister and short battery life cloud what is otherwise a superb cordless vacuum cleaner. Relocating the dustbin towards the handle removes a significant roadblock enabling it to go further. This is where the Dyson and Shark cordless vacuums perform better because they can use either a softer, hard-floor specific powered brush or an adjustable floor head to clean up these types of spills more effectively.

The Miele Triflex comes with a detachable battery, making it easy to replace and extend run time if you purchase. Miele claims that the TriflexHX2Pro offers up to 120 minutes of continuous power – achieved using both batteries. On the lower setting using just one battery, the HX2 Pro lasted just 27 minutes 14 seconds, whereas on the Max power setting runtime was only 11 minutes 23 seconds. Just twist and lift it off the motor, then twist the lid once more when you get to the bin and a flap pops open to let the dust fall out. This is helped by the Trflex HX2 Pro's extra-wide floorhead, at 28cm wide, which enables the vacuum to cover more floor space with each pass. It’s similar to the Bosch Serie 8 cordless vacuum we reviewed last year and better overall than the cheaper Vax Blade 4 but it lags behind the Dyson V8, V10 and V11. The worst will give you less than twenty minutes of power and take more than half a day to fully recharge. This test is particularly important for serious allergy sufferers who want to remove all of the fine dust and allergens they can from their home. It’s a clever design, although the girth and gloss of the various components meant it felt a tad slippery to handle at times and I found it awkward to reconfigure the various bits without dropping them on the floor.

That’s mitigated by the fact that you can move the motor unit down nearer the floor but it means in compact mode – say, when you’re cleaning the stairs or the car boot – the TriFlex HX1 is much more tiring on the wrist than its major rivals.Surprisingly, it was better with shorter five and seven-inch strands but struggled with nine-inch hair. The expected noise level for a vacuum cleaner is around 70dB, so the Miele Triflex HX2 Pro is less likely to irritate, if noise is important to you. Moving back to carpet and the Miele performed much better, managing to lift 85% of the Cheerio spillage in a single pass – which can be ascribed to the fact that it detects different floor types and adjusts accordingly. However, it didn’t do as well in the more tricky large particle test, where we challenge the vacuums to clean up 26g of spilt Cheerios. In our flour test on both hard floor and short-pile carpet, for instance, it picked up 90% of the material we scattered on the floor.
