While Seiko is not a bad choice in itself, this watch also deserves a rightful spot beside the SKX007. You can easily recognize them as the Citizen logo at 12 o’clock has been replaced by “Marina Militare” and the water-resistance rating is 500m instead of 200. There’s no denying it’s a well made Japanese watch that’s ideal for diving with the ISO certification and high visibility display.

The Citizen Promaster NY0040 is often overshadowed when it comes to diving watches by the likes of the Seiko SKX007 or the Seiko SKX009 which there’s no denying, are impressive watches. To complete the package, the NY0100-50XE is worn on a solid Super Titanium bracelet with a folding clasp and diving extension. Pulling on that neoprene suit is never a fun experience, but in this context, it was such a climactic moment. This gives the watch a handsome shine (not the usual dark grey colour, but something brighter), lightness (40% lighter than steel) and scratch-resistance, with more than 1,000Hv hardness. The bezel is often seen to be a little stiff but I’d personally rather have a stiff dial that one that could accidentally be turned.For a combat role, I would recommend only one mechanical watch: the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Chronometer. Finally, among the multiple watches produced under the Promaster collection, there’s one that has always ranked highly in the heart of enthusiasts, the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m, also known as the NY0040. Combined with the Sportech strap, this truly is one of the most spectacular releases we have seen from Panerai recently. Here again, it’s similar to the Seiko with a day and date function, but it strays in that it can be hand wound. Here again, the two make dive watches with a wide range of pricing and functionality and are revered by both professional and recreational divers.

But in combination with the full lume dial, this is a beauty of a watch that you can still pick up between €200 and €250. Citizen followed the same principle but reversed it by placing the crown at the 8 o’clock position instead of 4 o’clock. Aside from that, my only other general wish is for a hand-winding movement, but because this is Seiko, I can’t be too surprised that the watch is sold without one. The registers, chronograph seconds hand, and tachymeter scale join the hour and minute hands and the mentioned power reserve indicator in creating a magical lume show in the dark.
