Description

The story has a feel of being written by someone who's spent their life writing for/acting on the big screen. It is Margaret who embodies this idea as she determines to keep Michel Marcel and Edmond — known by this point as “Louis and Lolo” — safe from imposters who seek quick fame and fortune. I will definitely read more by Celia Imrie although on balance, I probably prefer her highly entertaining works of fiction. I’ve read Celia Imrie’ s books before and enjoyed them so, I was pleased to see she’d written another one but, this one disappointed me somewhat.

Beginning in Nice 1911, young French woman Marcella Caretto strives to protect her children from her husband, Michael Navratil, who has become cruel and controlling since their whirlwind romance. I had not read any Celia Imrie before but if this book is anything to go by, she is an excellent storyteller and I will be looking out for more of her work. A battle between the Royalist soldiers and the people allied with the police, who are successful, results in aristocrats being killed and the prisoners of the "Tyrants" (including Henriette) being freed. The first, Marcella, is a 21 year old mother of 2 boys, based in Nice, who has commenced divorce proceedings against her increasingly abusive and erratic husband, Michael.

The cast overacts wildly (especially Monte Blue as Danton) except for Schildkraut who underplays--and it works. For that, surely, is where any responsible account of Come and See needs to stake its final claim: the film is a masterpiece, after all, both in the quality of its imagination, and the magisterial way that it is structured.

A woman would not be granted a divorce on the grounds of cruelty and adultery unless her situation fit one of two conditions: the cruelty consisted of bodily harm or harm to health, and the husband performed the acts at least twice. Author/actor Celia Imrie does quite a good job uncovering this history and the real people involved. In Spike Jones' skit "The Late Late Late Movies" ( Mercury F-55191), "Billy Playtex" announces that night's feature as "'Orphans of the Storm'", starring the Gish Sisters! Her husband, Michael, an ambitious tailor, may have charmed her during their courtship, but their few years of marriage have revealed a cruel and controlling streak. Nonetheless, just the fact that the novel is partially set on the infamously ill-fated ocean liner will be enough to entice the interests of history lovers and Titanic aficionados seeking a different version of the sinking. But Henriette explains that she had promised Louise that she would not marry until Louise could look upon her husband to approve him. A crane that seems to have stepped out of a book of fairy stories pokes its inquisitive beak into their improvised shelter and surveys them.
