A simply extraordinary book anyone with a smart-phone or a social media account would do well to read—and heed. In 1993, Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge spent fifty days walking solo across Antarctica, becoming the first person to reach the South Pole alone, accompanied only by a radio whose batteries he had removed before setting out. My ultimate goal, which may be unrealistic, is to sit in Grand Central Station at its busiest time and not hear a thing. The clue is in this passage: Deep down in the ocean, below the waves and ripples, you can find your internal silence.

Whether you're in deep wilderness, taking a shower or on the dance floor, you can experience perfect stillness if you know where to look. I am over fifty years old and have attended my fair share of sixtieth, seventieth and eightieth birthday parties. In this meditative, charming and surprisingly powerful book, he explores the power of silence and the importance of shutting out the world. There aren’t enough special moments, so we end up making do—repetitive and mundane moments are documented instead.

I too remember crunching over ice at the South Pole—though I had not walked there like the author—and thinking about the ethereal quality of silence that the owned world cannot give (no country owns the Antarctic).

Obviously, these remarks are not a book review, only one person's experience with a worthwhile effort by an extraordinary man.One of the things I truly love is going for a walk, perhaps not to the South Pole like the author, but you can still find your own silence and peace in nature which allows your mind to become free and untethered. I thought this book may contain information that I was unaware of, but it was the same ideas, constantly repeated at various stages throughout the book. Reading this book gave me a sense of being fed and watered: it met a need in me to know that there are others who yearn for the silence of wild spaces in the midst of the daily noise of life. He shows us the unexpected places it sits--on the dance floor, in the shower, in a musical drop, on a mossy rock--and how silence opens doors to wonder and gratitude. The starry sky is the truest friend in life, when you've first become acquainted; it is ever there, it gives ever peace, ever reminds you that your restlessness, your doubt, your pains are passing trivialities. I don't knit, but when I watch someone who does, I think that they must have found some of the same inner peace that I discovered during my expeditions, even if their surroundings are not as quiet.

What Kagge actually means by silence in this book is that feeling of stillness, of being alone with your thoughts, rather than coping with the constant input of ideas and work by others into your skull. In this compact and astonishing meditation, Kagge explores the silence around us, the silence within us, and the silence each of us must create. My children wonder less and less; if they still wonder at anything, they pull out their smartphones to find the answer’ … Erling Kagge, author of Silence in the Age of Noise. He tells us how to find and notice the silence within ourselves, how to use it to gain a new perspective. For many people, it’s about FOMO, the “fear of missing out,” or “the fear of losing a special moment. The author spent fifty days alone in Antarctica, "On the twenty second day I wrote in my journal: At home I only enjoy 'big bites' Down here I am learning to value miniscule joys. In this book, an astonishing and transformative meditation, Kagge explores the silence around us, the silence within us, and the silence we must create.
