Some picture books with similar messages kind of hit you over the head (which I don't like), but The Good Egg is a moral wrapped up in a pun-filled story about a goody-two-shoes egg and his quest for perfection. Life is tough for our little friend as he’s teased and ignored while trying very hard to get the other eggs to live up to his standards. This book teaches kids that you don't always have to be perfect, but doesn't teach them that they don't have to put up with being bullied and taking loads of shit from their "friends". and then, sure, treat people the way they want to be treated, but what if they are jerks and you "have to" live with them? When Pete is not working on books he is helping to uplift many of the most successful animated franchises as a character designer, concept artist, and production designer.That type of “self care” doesn’t work in real life, so why teach it to children, furthering the selfish “world-revolves-around-me” mentality of youth today. The artwork is expressive, accentuating that humor, and capturing the various emotional states through which the egg passes.

This witty adventure is full of great messages about the importance of balance, self-care, and acceptance of self and others. The author has a title I like, All My Friends are Dead (a book about dinosaurs), but neither that book nor this are as edgy as I would like. The Good Egg is a positive role model for his willingness to help others, his attempt to remedy bad behavior of those around him, and mostly for his ability to step away from his comfort zone to prioritize his own well-being. It used to drive me bonkers when other kids wouldn't do what they were supposed to do or if they didn't do it the way I thought it should've been done.
