So it takes a certain sort of person to leave on a potentially apocalyptic mission, stuck for 9 years on a spaceship. The thing that happened in the hole and its tunnels holds crucial information, but sharing it could mean Mickey7’s permanent death. Mickey is an Expendable on a colonization mission to a distant planet, in a distant future where colonization efforts are all the rage. There are a lot of thought provoking questions throughout that really add to the overall enjoyment, without making your brain hurt too much. The plot was very engaging, light and then loaded underneath with deeper stuff that I just loved getting my teeth into.

Between fighting alien creatures, pondering what it means to be human, and looking at cloning from various perspectives, there is something for everyone here, and Ashton delivers all of it with plenty of wittiness and flair. Being a history major, in a day and age where everyone has ready access to any history information they need, did not prepare Mickey for any type space mission related job.

I was taught to make sure that the heart of the story is the characters and their interactions and not focus too hard on the science.

There were insectile things half the size of a man that shot jets of concentrated sulfuric acid from glands in their heads. The protagonist is human, but his tone and dry humour are on a par with the narrator from the Murderbot Diaries (so if you like that, you'll love this, and vice versa). The cover promises that the book is, "Soon To Be A Major Motion Picture" (why are books never made into minor motion pictures? Tonally, it's a good fit for fans of The Martian or The Murderbot Diaries, but I was hoping for a little more heft, probably because I enjoyed the premise and worldbuilding so much.

You just introduce your cool concept and you don’t have to prove that it can result in a good movie because the studio doesn’t even get to the second act.
