Description

The current brush heads are series 3 which follow the same pattern as the second series. You have the C3 (Premium Plaque Defense), G3 (Premium Gum Care) and W3 (Premium White). You can tell the difference between the 3 and 2 series because these are a bit larger and include a silicone bumper on the sides for comfort. Brush heads that come with the Sonicare DiamondClean The 5100 offers 3 modes: clean, gum care and white. It has two buttons allowing you to easily switch between these modes to find the one that you like the best. It also comes with 2 W2 Optimal White brush heads, which is nice since Sonicare brush heads are some of the most expensive on the market. 6100 Whilst both brands typically are designed to resist water and can safely be rinsed under the tap and used in the shower, neither brand would really recommend or advise prolonged exposure to water and certainly advise against immersion/submersion in water. Timers For a more detailed scenario, imagine cleaning your teeth in the bathroom of a house in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep. With an Oral-B brush unless you closed the bathroom door you would likely wake someone up. With Sonicare you could leave the bathroom door open and probably nobody would hear you.

The battery indicator on this Philips is one thing that could use improvement. As of now, it is a single tiny light at the base of the handle. It will glow steady green when the charge is full, and then start to blink when the battery is at about 60%. The light turns amber when it needs to be charged, and the brush will also beep three times. When the battery completely dies, then it beeps 5 times, and shuts off. We prefer LED battery indicators that show us visually how much life is left. This is where the Sonicare lineup gets a bit strange. Notice right away that there is a DiamondClean series and a DiamondClean Smart series, and if you look these brushes up, you will notice a huge difference in price. This is because they really are brushes of a different bristle. Typically I do not create detailed comparisons for cross-manufacturer brushes, however, I have compared the two flagship models in my Oral-B iO vs 9900 Prestige post. To be called a sonic toothbrush this vibration must be at a speed that causes and audible hum. This is up to about 20,000 Hz (or vibrations per second). Vibrations faster than this are “ultrasonic” and can not be heard by the human ear. Overall, the Sonicare is one of the more costly brushes to own, especially if you are buying genuine Sonicare brush heads from a local store. The good news, however, is that they are readily available and easy to find! ConclusionBattery life for the DiamondClean was better than expected giving us 37 days of battery life which is well-above the advertised 2 weeks. The glass cup which doubles as an induction charger will take almost 18 hours to completely recharge the battery.

At the time of writing both Sonicare and Oral-B have about 15 different models each in their ranges. Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 uses our unique sonic technology which drives fluid deep between teeth along with our specially designed brush heads to gently but effectively remove plaque in-between teeth and along the gum line. Simply brush with our Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 for 2 minutes twice a day for increased plaque removal for healthier teeth and gums in just 2 short weeks1. Another specialized brush head is the Intercare brush head which is more compact than the standard brush heads, and may be more comfortable for people with smaller mouths. They claim that it reaches between teeth and hard to reach areas better than the larger brushes. You can also find a 9750 which is the 9700 plus the deluxe brush head storage case. You can buy this accessory separately. What propels Sonicare forward is BrushSync, which I explain in detail here, but essentially it is a 2 part system that alerts you when it is time to change your brush head and selects the most suitable cleaning mode, based on the brush head fitted to the handle. One downside of this series is that these have the old NiCad batteries which do not last as long as the newer Lithium Ion batteries, so we would recommend stepping up to the next run on the Sonicare ladder. ProtectiveClean Philips charges an arm and a leg for replacement brush heads for this type of brush (about 10 euros apiece) but you can find reasonably priced generics that might make it worth giving it a try. So now you see how confusing this is. The DiamondClean and DiamondClean Smart are not the same brush, and once you add the “smart” behind the name, the price basically doubles. For the benefit of your oral health, worry less about the brand of toothbrush and worry more about your brushing technique, brushing time and how often you use the brush.

Some people complain that the pressure sensor is too easily triggered. We found that it did engage at the lowest level of all our brushes at about 240 grams of force. The industry standard is between 250-350 grams. This sudden loss of power can be annoying, but it also teaches you to let the Sonicare vibrations do the work rather than trying to scrub too hard and risk damaging your gums! Brush headsI was very surprised to find that this brush is still available. This brush is interesting because rather than just having a replaceable brush head, the entire brushing mechanism is replaced each time you put on a new brush head. This was the first kind of sonicare toothbrush I owned circa 2012. One major problem with this brush is that it doesn’t even come with a pressure sensor. It is near the top-of-the-line brush that Sonicare offers, but it is missing a basic feature that we think is pretty important. Why did Philips not include one? We don’t know, but it means we wouldn’t recommend this brush.

They do also offer an automatic power off feature which in my opinion is the best feature and most applicable of all additions over the basic cleaning mode. Oral-B was the first to introduce Bluetooth to the toothbrush and their implementation of the pressure sensor is more user friendly. For example, you also have to consider your technique – how you brush with an electric toothbrush. Both types of toothbrush need a different technique to manual toothbrushes.

The 4500 model is almost the same at the 4300, but instead of 2 intensities, it offers two modes: daily clean and gum care. It has a 2nd button and indicator light to let you switch modes and see which mode you are in. It comes with the G2 Optimal Gum Care brush head. 5100 Whilst all these features are great, there is one thing that many of us, myself included forget or overlook and that is how we use them. It is all very well having 6 cleaning modes, but what is the point if we only use them once or twice. Most of us fall into the trap of just using the standard ‘Clean’ mode most of the time. We either forget about the others or simply don’t bother.
