Changes to the Key Stage 3 English curriculum were taking place on a national level, and these included the compulsory teaching of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Poet, atheist, and communist, New Yorker Joy Davidman is an unconventional woman--and an unlikely partner for an English academic and theologian.

S. Lewis, for readers who appreciate stories of determined, risk taking, and independent women, and for those looking for a new historical fiction read or an inspiring romance. For instance, I can’t say really comment on the plot or the characters as they were not of the author’s imagination, but were real people and known facts. She ached, as we all do, to be accepted for who she really was even as she lost track of who she really was. The couple hold hands, even kiss and as the title suggests, in 1956, finally, for only a few short years before her death from cancer, Joy becomes Mrs.

With her cousin’s encouragement, she considers traveling to England, to immerse herself in its history and literature. I particularly loved Henry’s vivid descriptions of Lewis’s home, The Kilns, as well as the depictions of the joy-filled times the two shared together, going for walks or sitting in front of the fireplace sharing stories. I thought it read very much like a book written during that time, rather than a book written in the modern day but set then. It’s amazing to see her grow in a time where women weren’t respected in comparison to now, as well as hearing about her work and life pre- becoming Mrs Lewis.Through her great friendship with Lewis, she finds enduring love, a trusted friend and confidant, and a true writing partner. The story is in first person which I used to say I wasn’t a fan, but I’m hooked now after reading this. When faced with her mortality, it is not the love of Christ that brings her abiding hope, it is the love of her Jack.

She was drunk in love with the idea of England, Oxford, literary idols, alcohol (even though she was so harmed by alcoholism), and tobacco. With over 6 million of the world’s best eBooks to choose from, Kobo offers you a whole world of reading. S. Lewis’s honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss.I did not see a woman who was attempting to work on her marriage, although this could just be because of the author's representation, and trusting in God to work through her marriage or through her divorce. What I’m trying to say is that whilst I found some elements difficult to read, the greater part enthralled me. Even though I knew what was to going to happen to bring the book to a close, I still found a tear escaping my eye. She, leaving her boys behind with their father and her cousin explore Lewis's world, that of Oxford and Cambridge, and of course finds herself falling for the author. I understand the value of showing Joy’s changing relationship with Jack and the many years it took for them to fall in love completely.

This is perplexing and a little distressing to Joy, who has a strong libido and had “pursued men with embarrassing voracity” in an unsuccessful attempt to find solace, to fix her loneliness. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldn't destroy. She took a massive leap, leaving her husband and kids behind and coming to England, even if only for a few months initially. I followed YouTuber, English teacher and author Mr Bruff who, to my great surprise, asked me if I would consider writing a GCSE self-study grammar revision book.I was SO positive I was going to love this book, and am disappointed it didn’t grab me, as it has so many other people. A book (or nowadays, my kindle) has always been an essential handbag item for a train or plane journey. Lewis was a man who enjoyed the simple life, a good (fag) cigarette, a whiskey and simple friendships. And, to be honest, I found it rather disingenuous that she was so dumbstruck when her husband wrote to her about his love for her cousin. With flawless prose and engaging dialogue, the author weaves a beautiful love story of two literary minds.
