Description

A beautiful client, Clare Cavendish, rich and mysterious, a missing link, to be found dead or alive, the flatfoot cop to be manipulated and avoided. Even a Sydney Greenstreet character and an Elisha Cook Jnr. (and a nice touch, a reference to Aidan Higgins' 'Langrishe, Go Down). Well, let me save you some work. My maiden name is Langrishe. Have you heard of Langrishe Fragrances, Inc.?" Phyllis Coates is the last surviving cast member of the 1950's Superman television show...MikeM. 8/29/2016 If this weren't presented as a Marlowe book (and if it didn't carry the many allusions to Chandler's works so blatantly), I think I'd have enjoyed it a lot more. The ending would need to be reworked, of course, but, frankly, I think it ought to have been reworked anyway given how, as another reviewer points out, appallingly eye-rolling it is. For a while, the story clips along alright, and the central plot certainly keeps Marlowe confused in an appropriately Chandleresque fashion, but... well... it's just not Marlowe. Marlowe visits Peterson's grave and encounters a mourning woman but she escapes before he can talk to her. Marlowe convinces his friend, homicide detective Joe Green, to open a murder investigation now they know the body was not Peterson's. Green admonishes Marlowe for his relentless pursuit of the truth and reveals that the body was identified by the Corbata Club owner, Floyd Hanson. Marlowe meets with Hanson at the club, the pair failing to extract information from each other. While leaving, Marlowe notices the woman from the grave, Peterson's sister Lynn, and clandestinely agrees to meet with her at the Cabana club later that evening; their discussion is observed by Hanson. When he arrives, Marlowe is assaulted by two men but beats them unconscious. I thought about Clare Cavendish. Something didn't add up. As a private eye I'm not completely unknown, but why would a daughter of Dorothea Langrishe of Ocean Heights and who knew how many other swell spots choose me to find her missing man? And why, in the first place, had she got herself involved with Nico Peterson, who, if her description of him was accurate, would turn out to be nothing but a cheap grifter in a sharp suit? Long and convoluted questions, and hard to concentrate on while remembering Clare Cavendish's candid eyes and the amused, knowing light that shone in them. I've been reading Gardner's Perry Mason books off and on for many years. Many years ago, I was an intense fan of the series, and read them all. Now, after a lot of water over the dam, I'm looking at them again. I turned to go, then stopped. How beautiful she was, standing in the sun in her cool white linen, with all that shining glass and candy-pink stone behind her. I could still feel the softness of her mouth on mine. "Tell me," I said, "how did you hear about Peterson's death?"Gardner died at the age of eighty-one in 1970, the author of more than seven hundred fictional works, including 127 novels, 400 articles and more than a dozen travel books. He also wrote under the pseudonyms A.A. Fair, Kyle Corning, Charles M. Green, Carleton Kendrake, Charles J. Kenny, Les Tillray, and Robert Parr. In the mid-1960s, Gardner’s novels sold around 20,000 per day. He is considered one of the best-selling mystery writers of all time with 325 million books distributed globally.

I hadn't really thought she would. "A hundred dollars deposit and twenty-five a day plus expenses while I'm making my inquiries." I considered poking at my pipe again but thought it would seem a little obvious the second time around. Instead I gave her a level look, making my eyes go blank. "As I said, Mrs. Cavendish—a hundred down and twenty-five a day, plus expenses. The way I work, every case is a special case." She was silent for a moment, and again her eyes took on that appraising look, making me squirm a little. "You haven't asked me anything about myself," she said. Kroll, Justin (31 March 2017). His father worked in a garage and died when Banville was in his early thirties; his mother was a housewife. He is the youngest of three siblings; his older brother Vincent is also a novelist and has written under the name Vincent Lawrence as well as his own. His sister Vonnie Banville-Evans has written both a children's novel and a reminiscence of growing up in Wexford. The Waterford writer, Bill Long, made Chandler's acquaintance in London in 1958 when they lived two doors apart in Chelsea. His depiction of Philip Marlowe is spot on and does work well, still feels like a pastiche and less of a Marlowe story, something Parker did do better.

At the Cahuilla, as it happens. A Sunday afternoon. My husband was engaged in a particularly strenuous chukker. That's a—"

Somewhere Raymond Chandler is smiling, because this is a beautifully rendered hardboiled novel that echoes Chandler's melancholy at perfect pitch. The story is great, but what amazed me is how John Banville caught the cumulative effect Chandler's prose had on readers. It's hard to quantify, but it's also what separated the Marlowe novels from the general run of noir (which included some damn fine novelists, like David Goodis and Jim Thompson). The sadness runs deep. I loved this book. It was like having an old friend, one you assumed was dead, walk into the room. Kind of like Terry Lennox, hiding behind those drapes.” — Stephen King Second episode in a row featuring a character who turns out to have surprising parents.
