It’s also true that Boyce sent his men unarmed – he didn’t consider Noye to be dangerous. And, as depicted on screen, Noye’s rottweilers alerted him to the police. Dashing outside, Noye stabbed Fordham 11 times (10 in the show) and claimed he had acted in self-defence. He was shot six times in what was a clean, efficient, gangland execution, and the killer has never been found. Since then, there’s been much speculation over precisely why he was killed.

In 1996 he then stabbed a man in a road rage incident, killing him, and was given a life sentence for the killing in 2000 after an international manhunt. He was released in 2019. On 10 October 2001 [49] and again in 2004, [50] Noye appealed unsuccessfully against his conviction. He was represented again by Michael Mansfield. [51] In 2007 a legal challenge was made against the Criminal Cases Review Commission's decision not to refer his case to the Court of Appeal as "legally flawed". [52] George Francis, who was suspected of handling the stolen gold bullion, was shot dead outside his Bermondsey courier business in May 2003. His killer was John O’Flynn, a former associate of the Kray twins, also believed to be involved in laundering the Brink’s-Mat gold. Meanwhile, South London wheeler dealer Gordon Parry (Sean Harris) and the respected establishment solicitor Edwyn Cooper (Dominic Cooper), set about laundering the proceeds from the stolen gold. Some years later, McAvoy and Robinson also made moves to cooperate and give up their share, but negotiations with police were scuppered by their outside men: Brian Perry and Tony White (again). There are a number of invented or amalgamated characters in The Gold. Feisty-but-fictional DC Jennings, for instance (played by Charlotte Spencer). Also created for the show is solicitor Edwyn Cooper (Dominic Cooper), an amalgam of various big money players who helped launder the Brink’s-Mat money, though he’s most closely based on solicitor Michael Relton. M25 killer Kenneth Noye to be transferred to open prison". The Guardian. 8 August 2017 . Retrieved 8 August 2017. Interview with Wensley Clarkson's author of 2012 book 'The Curse of Brink’s-Mat: 25 Years of Murder and Mayhem' considered the definitive account of the legendary heist The bloody aftermath

In May 2019, the parole board announced that Noye was "suitable for return to the community" and would be released from prison within about three months. [64] [65] Birmingham-born gangster John Palmer, a jeweller and bullion dealer at the time of the robbery, was arrested but successfully argued in court that he did not realise the gold he was handling was linked to Brink’s-Mat. He was cleared of all the charges against him. He added: “Unfortunately, the lodge Ladies Night fell after Noye was put in prison on remand. The 20 places booked by him had to be paid for – the other members had to cover the cost.” Davies, Gareth (22 May 2019). "M25 road rage killer Kenneth Noye approved for release from prison". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 22 May 2019.He said: “Neil and I spent a fascinating couple of hours with the real Brian Boyce who is now retired. But trying to get him to talk about his approach to policing, but also specifically about Brink’s-Mat, was a real insight. And I think Neil’s really wrung all the juice out of the conversations that he had had in research because it’s all there in the script. That’s half true,” says Wensley Clarkson, author of several books on the case. “It works for dramatic purposes. But it was always suggested to me that they were happy for this fallacy to be portrayed – that they didn’t know about the gold when really they did. You can read into that what you want.” Police initially named Anthony Francis as the man they wanted to question. By December 1996 this name was found to be a false identity used by Noye, after the Land Rover Discovery registered in his name and matching the vehicle driven by the man who stabbed Stephen Cameron was unloaded in Kyrenia, Cyprus, in July that year. Noye was not found in Cyprus. [20] Mr Neville said that although Noye’s attendance at lodge meetings was irregular, “he did however like to attend Ladies Festivals – large dinner dance parties where he could show off to friends and be ‘flash’”.

A police hunt assisted by GCHQ found Noye in Spain, where he was arrested in the resort of Barbate near Gibraltar [21] on 28 August 1998. [22] [23] [24] [25] Cameron's girlfriend Danielle Cable, who witnessed the killing, was secretly flown out to positively identify him, [15] which she did on 27 August. [26] Noye lost an appeal against his extradition from Spain seven months later. [27] He was extradited to Britain in May 1999, nine months after his arrest, and went on trial 10 months later. In particular, they objected to the implication that Noye was assisted by fellow Masons in initially evading justice. Krays' associate George Francis, who was once questioned in regards to the Brink's-Mat money, was gunned down outside his south London office in 2003. Another money-laundering suspect, Brian Perry, was shot dead in 2001, and in December 1998 jeweller Solly Nahome, who had melted down some of the gold, was shot dead outside his home. As well as having friends in the Kent police, Noye – according to Clarkson’s book – was sleeping with a civilian within the Kent constabulary who passed him intel on the Brink’s-Mat investigation.
