I liked the idea of the book, about reading about Charles, Caroline, and the children traveling to Kansas. I rarely will read a book written by someone else that picks up on characters from another author’s work, so I was unsure how I would respond to this.

I was crying by chapter one, and shriek-laughing by chapter two - with every other emotion to come by page 381 (and I say this as someone usually very much dead inside). uk/landing-page/orion/orion-company-information/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Orion Publishing Group Limited. Believe me, I fight this each time I read the Little House series, and I have to remind myself that Caroline was of a different generation and time; she would not have had the same thoughts as I do. and very much unlike Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie, the Ingalls family was NOT FORCED OFF their Kansas land claim by the US government declaring their homestead Indian Territory, but because Mr. Back in 1991, Barnstable High student Caroline Kepnes tagged along to the Concord movie set of 'School Ties' where her older brother, Alex, was an extra.Laura was relegated to a squawky child in the background, while Mary was more of a focus for Caroline. It's funny, compelling, emotional and unique, with the most relatable, real characters I've read in years. This is a beautiful tribute to a mother and a family who followed their dreams and a tale that is as uplifting and real as the original Little House books.

Still, I'd absolutely recommend this for Little House fans or for those who love a detailed pioneer story. Caroline's fear when crossing the frozen water, and her racing thoughts as to how she will protect her daughters if the ice breaks, are written with an intensity that the original book could not bring through Laura’s eyes. My only one complaint - and it is minor - is that the author included a bit of Caroline and Charles' sex life, which could have been avoided, in my opinion.

We witness the strength of a pregnant Caroline as she battles the hardships of the journey while also juggling motherhood and leaving her own family ties behind in the east. Caroline's book is a plea, for policymakers, organisations, professionals, and the public, to exercise decency, challenge unsafe or unkind practice, support people in distress, and push for improved services.

I encourage you to slow down and give yourself the time to fully appreciate Sarah Miller’s engaging writing in this wonderful read. My favorite is THE LONG WINTER, and that single volume was probably one of the biggest reasons why I wrote AFTER EVERYONE DIED. Now that familiar story is retold in this captivating tale, authorized by the Little House Heritage Trust, that vividly reimagines our past.I will admit that when I read the original series, with all its warmth and nostalgia softening the edges of the hardship this family endured, I often chuckle a little at Wilder’s characterization of Caroline Ingalls - this prim, unruffled woman dutifully following her never-satisfied, possibly slightly crazy husband ever westward, always with some dusty platitude on her lips and an apparent will to quell any spirit in her daughters. Fraser's major achievement is to invest Caroline Lamb's life with a long-overdue sense of proportion . I had read 'The Little House on the Prairie' as a child, as a teacher to my class and to my own two children.

Laura’s affection and respect for her mother are obvious, but you do wonder what is going on in Caroline’s mind beyond the next proverb. The section about their wedding night was too explicit, and was completely unnecessary to the theme of the book. Not to be missed by Wilder’s grown-up fans or those who enjoy historical fiction about the settling of the American West in the late 1800s.
