Finally, the stove set up (e.g. stove model, windshield, heat reflector, heat exchangers on the pots) is a much bigger factor than the canister type. Store your Jetboil fuel canisters in a cool, dry area of low humidity, away from areas where there are open flames and ignition sources, like furnaces, hot water heaters, or power tool shops, and away from areas of solar heat gain, like windows providing direct sunlight. Doing so prevents humidity and condensation based rusting of the canister, prevents ignition of stray gas from a leaking canister, and prevents a pressure based explosion of the canister, causing damage to people or property, and producing a large bolus of gas that is toxic to breath, respectively. Other information is taken from my own tests and measurements. I only own seven of these stoves (!) but I will add data on any more that I acquire over the coming months and years.

But if I invert the recharged canister and plug it into an inverted canister stove, like the Kovea Spider, which burns unvaporized liquid fuel, I can get another 20-30 minutes of burn time from the canister until it’s completely empty. I’ve seen this happen before with canister stoves when the fuel component inside the canister that is responsible for vaporization in an upright stove burns off (propane) leaving the liquid component (isobutane) behind. Use with Inverted Canister Stoves WindBurners and Reactors are regulated at 12-15psi, so they’ll provide you with pretty much the same boil time for the lifetime of the canister. On a windy day, with a half full canister most of the competition will struggle to boil water. The Kovea Alpine EZ Eco is one of the heaviest at 770g, but this is misleading since it includes its own internal gas canister. In conclusion, most System Stoves boil water at similar speeds and with reasonably similar efficiency, with the following exceptions: Water height: distance from ground to internal base of pot (i.e. where the water starts to fill from). Some people seem to think that certain brands give a more consistent flow and let you use the full canister better. But that’s not widely experienced, there’s no obvious consistency in which are the best/worst brands, and I don’t know of any reason that would be true (ultimately, they are just metal pots filled with gas).

The Jetboil Flash easily collapses into itself and the components including the canister fits into the pot The stoves with the lowest centre of gravity are the Primus Lite and Lite+ at 18cm. That’s a conscious move by Primus, whose “Laminar Flow Burner Technology” allows for a shorter burner height. Jetboil Jetpower fuel canister weights when empty and full (mobile users scroll left and right) Weighing a Jetboil fuel canister on a kitchen scale before an experimentThe Jetboil comes with an adaptor which would allow you to use a wide range of pot and pans. The MSR on the other hand can only work with its pot and no other pots. When it comes to this flexibility, the Jetboil wins. Having given two talks on camping stoves at recent festivals, one of the key things I realised was that not everyone knows about the different types of gas canisters available for camping stoves. I have used many of outdoor cooking devices but the MSR Reactor has stolen my heart. It is my favorite integrated stove of all times. First, it’s light weight. One would think that simply because it has a higher capacity makes it much heavier. It weighs a meager 15.1 ounces. The heaviest Jetboil device on the other hand weighs slightly above 11 ounces.

Although far from heavy, the LowDown is a little weightier than we might have expected, and the price seems quite high for an accessory. However, the fact that it makes so many stoves increasingly useable means the LowDown Remote Stove Adapter is an easy way to get even more out of some of the best wild-cooking devices available, and that may justify its addition to your kit. Five things you need to know about the new MSR LowDown Remote Stove Adapter Low & stable For example, if you know you have an empty canister, search for its net weight, which is usually printed on the canister’s exterior. If a canister has a net weight of 110 grams, this tells you it had 110 grams of fuel in it when you bought it new. When refilling it, stop when its empty weight has increased by 110 grams. It helps to have a scale handy for this process. You can increase the pressure inside a canister by plunging it into hot water. What Gets Transferred?Besides being so efficient, the Jetboil kit is beautiful. It seems like all the components fit on neatly. The lid is made of well-refined, hardened rubber and it fits tightly onto the pot. Another eye-catching attribute on this piece is the sleeve which is covered with a colorful cloth. It also has a shiny metallic handle so you can actually boil water while walking. The thrill of using the FLASH cooking system

I was surprised to find that almost all of the stoves boiled the water in very similar times. 5 out of 7 stoves boiled the water in between 2mins 13secs and 2mins 20secs. The only exceptions were: Jetboil Fuel Canisters are unofficially refillable using a small, dedicated coupler valve sold online, that lets you screw two canisters together and transfer the contents of one into the other. Generally, you cool the receiving canister in the freezer for 20 minutes or more, so that it has a lower internal pressure than the supplying canister. The fuel from the higher pressure canister is then naturally pushed into the canister with less pressure when using the coupler valve. The piezo-lighter on the Jetboil PCS are very delicate. If not handled with uttermost care, it can easily break. In fact, there’s a high probability it will break after a few days’ use (if you use your device often). If it breaks, you will be forced to buy a conventional lighter to ignite the burner. The lighter on the MSR Reactor is much stronger and lasts longer, it could last a lifetime if used carefully. Many versions of the MSR Reactor produce a lot of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can suffocate the user to death if the device is used in an enclosed environment. This would make it dangerous for use in a tent. That’s why I tried them out and went a step further to comb the internet for more information on them. Read on and in a few minutes, you’ll be in a position to tell which one best suits your needs.

About GO Outdoors

It should be noted that Jetboil publishes a warning on the sides of their Jetpower fuel canisters that says not to refill them. Also if you are using Jetboil fuel as your supplying canister, you can smell for leaks in the transfer process, as the manufacture adds in a foul smelling chemical for safety. However if your basement is subject to water migration and wet floors after it rains, consider storing your fuel in a water tight, plastic container away from the ground. Can You Store Jetboil Fuel in a Closet? In 2001, Jetboil released a stove that was different from anything else on the market: an all-in-one burner and pot, designed purely for heating water as rapidly and efficiently as possible. Predictably, the larger stoves tend to offer the best millitres per gram (e.g. Jetboil Sumo and Joule, and the larger MSR Reactors). Often because they have the exact same burners as small stoves, just with bigger pots attached.
