Description

The Rose Garden, part of Heysham Head , was a once-popular attraction where visitors could enjoy concert parties, brass bands, and many other attractions such as clowns, singers and comedy acts. On 3 August 1928, the name changed again when the Corporation of Morecambe amalgamated with Heysham Urban District Council to form the Municipal Borough of Morecambe and Heysham. Then he pitches in with the volunteers who look after the Gwili Railway and ends this leg in Swansea, where he learns how to pose for a photograph in Victorian style. Morecambe was mentioned in an episode of the prison-set television comedy Porridge first broadcast in 1973: ". In Preston, where four mill workers had been shot dead by soldiers during a protest in 1842, Portillo reads the Riot Act.

This photograph was taken in 1940 at a time when the brewing of nettle drink in Heysham had become widespread. Portillo takes a white-knuckle walk on the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, follows in the footsteps of the Victorians to experience the delights of the Giant's Causeway, and explores the rich history of Derry. Turner visited Heysham in 1816 and made several sketches which in 1818 he used as a basis for the painting we see here. When the rugby football schism occurred in 1895, the now defunct Morecambe RFC joined the Northern Rugby Football Union (now Rugby Football League) in its second season.Morecambe features in The Acoustics of Morecambe Bay, a music theatre piece by Peter McGarr which evokes the sound contrast between bay and town. He begins in Barkingside, where Victorian philanthropist Thomas Barnardo made it his mission to transform the lives of destitute children, tries his hand at loading a container onto a pocket wagon at Tilbury Docks, and ends his trip in Rochester, where he encounters a host of familiar characters and explores a town that was an inspiration for many of Charles Dickens' works.

The 1960 film The Entertainer, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, was filmed on location in the town. He then discovers how the railways transformed the game of golf at the Prestwick Golf Club and uncovers the story of the great Victorian tartan hoax in the Vestiarium Scoticum at Paisley. Portillo travels from Ipswich to Chelmsford, starting at an agricultural implements works with its own railway sidings. In Oakham in Rutland, Portillo learns about a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages and decides to take part. Portillo is invited aboard the construction locomotive for Crossrail to travel under the River Thames and to meet the impressive Mary, vital to the project. Portillo gets a rare chance to drive a heritage diesel train, finds out why Norfolk black turkeys appeared on the Christmas menu in Bradshaw's day, and samples some classic Cromer crab.
