This list has wallet-sized and wallet-friendly games; games for the first timer and for friends who have been playing for years.

This can may allow you to roll a die again for a bonus, give you a specialty die face or let you trade gold for Glory Points.My flatmate has rolled the Mirror of the Abyss dice face, letting him copy one rolled face from an opponent and apply its effect. But, aside from an expansion and a few other games with modifiable dice (yes, I’m aware Rattlebones came out a few years earlier), the future that this made me think was coming just … didn’t happen. So when a game comes out, like Dice Forge, centered around the excitement of rolling dice, you expect that part of the game to be exciting. There is a bit of interaction as far as displacing an opponent from a card portal, but this only gives the displaced opponent a reward of being able to roll his dice and take resources.

Dice Forge is a dice rolling game, where you can upgrade your die by ripping off the sides you don’t like and replacing them with sides you do. This also has the nice benefit of letting you know if you haven’t matched up the correct cards, yet. And once you’ve picked that you need to decide which dice to add them to (you each have two): do you build one die that guarantees you something good?All of the little nuances and tricky decision points that you’ll find in a standard game of Dominion are present here, just with a bit less control over your outputs. There are cards that trigger immediately, cards that trigger perpetually, and cards that linger with grandeur reserved for the endgame. Glory Points (GP) - Green - Contributes directly to your score; can be earned by rolling the appropriate dice face, activating certain reinforcements, and at the end of the game the Glory value of all collected cards is added to your score. Possibly the other cards in the game are better (we played with the basic set), and I’d be willing to play the game again to see, but so far I am not particularly impressed.

The mechanics and presentation of this game stand so strong on their own that the “story” seems to be an after thought. The only knock I can make about the quality of the game is the fact that the player tokens are just generic wooden pawns. Will you join forces with the Titans in the titan module, or undertake Hera's labyrinth and take home even more treasure than ever before in the Goddess module?Régis Bonnessée is a French designer with three previous games which have caught my eye (Seasons, Lords of Xidit and Himalaya). Get One Good Die and you can focus on getting the x3 face a few times, so that you can triple the outcome of the die.
