Sia 9214 Double Sided Pad 98x120x13mm is the standard foam double sided sanding pad for maximum flexibility. It looks expensive and is dearer than when I bought mine on special at Screwfix, but it gives you a slightly cushioned velcro pad sized to the sheets (choice of two sizes) and a connection for a vacuum cleaner hose. Says he currently none too patiently waiting for oil to dry so that I can get another coat on today.

Starting with the obvious reason and that is to get your finish as smooth and professional looking and feeling as possible. The purpose of doing this between coats is to smooth down any raised grain or imperfections that have occurred from the first application. To which I should have added "and in the case of a wooden item, to re-flatten any grain that may have been raised during the application of the paint/varnish". But if it's removing raised wood fibres from a water based finish or stain then a tiny bit more abrasion is helpful. The pads work excellently when sanding wood, plastic, metal components as well as painted surfaces where their woven structure resists clogging.

If you just applying a liquid or solid wax, or oil, that doesnt raise the grain so does not need denibbing.

It really depends of what type of de-nibbing you're doing, if it's specks of dust trapped in Osmo or Danish Oil or a wiping varnish then that's all you need. As I havent done this before I presume that you just run a cloth or pad of sorts over the finish gently to give the silky smooth finish? Aluminium Oxide abrasive ('Green' general purpose and 'Red' very fine pads), Silicon Carbide abrasive ('Grey' ultra fine pads), Phenolic resin bonded to nylon fibre pad. As I haven't done this before I presume that you just run a cloth or pad of sorts over the finish gently to give the silky smooth finish? It can be done with any oil finish and will just improve and smooth the surface for a slight more superior finish, if you don’t do it is not the end of the world, but it is something that we recommend. Denibbing is a process to remove nibs -when a varnish is applied to wood the grain is raised so it feels rough when the varnish has dried -hence the need for fine abrasive (abrasive isnt made wit sand these days! You don't need to go over the same area any more than once or twice, it should feel smooth after one or two light passes. If it doesn’t that means that more denibbing is required, and after that if it still isnt smooth then it probably hasn’t been as sanded as well as it should of. These are a 30mm abrasive veclro backed sanding block, ideal for removing small imperfections from paintwork when you need to do a small localised repair, such as a localised deep scratch or flattening back paint after a stone chip repair. I use 0000 (four-noughts) wire wool (that's a grade finer than John, above) for applying the wax, but you can use a pan scourer (the green or white matty things, not Brillo pads, they are too coarse).
