While sure, most Annis Hags you come across are going to be horrendous, this isn’t a hard and fast rule, and especially for new DMs who mightn’t yet grasp the flexibility of the rules, highlighting that these labels are simply ‘typical’ and can have exceptions, allows space for exemption and more dynamic stories to arise. I know full well that tons of other people found managing spellcasters in combat tricky, so all in all I agree with the change.

Instead, it appears that Wizards will be taking a far more incremental approach this time, weaving in changes both large and small while still maintaining a connection to what came before. Abyssal Wretch – The Abyssal Wretch is the result that befalls any Adventurer unfortunate enough to be infected by a Rutterkin. Dungeons and Dragons has nearly 50 years of lore under its belt, so this step in respecting a shift towards homebrew says a lot. Now, in terms of what creatures there actually are, A total of 267 monsters appear in Volo’s and Mordenkainen’s combined, and Monsters of the Multiverse has 260, so naturally we’ve lost a few (or appear to have).

In those previous books, the monsters did hit their challenge ratings, but we used a different method to hit it. Suggested moral alignments for certain species have also been removed for Monsters of the Multiverse. Mind you, some of the other lore content in those books is about as far from indispensable as you can get—I’m thinking in particular of the elf stuff—and even the best material has elements that you can feel free to discard. Wizards of the Coast is not exempt from the ongoing global supply chain issues that are impacting everything from automobile manufacturers to local grocers. The Player's Handbook, or PHB, includes just 9 total playable races, so this is a hefty chunk of new content. As well as this, terms such as ‘Madness’ and ‘Insanity’ have often been changed to ‘Confusion’, a change I’m quite happy to see. This change is constant across all three stat blocks, and I expect that we’re going to see this new implementation become universal in the not too distant future. James Grebey, for SyFy Wire, wrote that the updated rules decouple "cultural characteristics from the physical or magical ones" and it "removes setting-specific information about the races, which combined with the more flexible stat alignment should make them easier to slot into any fantasy world [.

In addition, it replaces two other supplements, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes from 2018 and Volo's Guide to Monsters from 2016.I do not think it’s a bad book, but I am strongly against merging most of spells of a creature that is meant to be master at magic into 1 to 3 generic actions (very offputting in Strixhaven for me). With over 6 million of the world’s best eBooks to choose from, Kobo offers you a whole world of reading.
